Crazy Video of a NYC Intersection and Traffic

mashtofu 06-14-11 12:05 PM

Wow, makes me feel a lot better about living in a small city. Most people I know seem to blame cars for being irresponsible on the road 99% of the time, but apparently cyclists and pedestrians are just as guilty. If only everyone was slightly less selfish and more alert..

mkeHENRY 06-14-11 02:29 PM

Wow, that was a great video.

longjohns 06-14-11 03:28 PM

that is pretty much every intersection in new york city. everyone (peds, bikers, cars) is so set in their ways i dont see it changing anytime soon.

I love the epic truck U-turn.

Fantana 06-14-11 03:41 PM

WOW, makes me feel a bit better about the drivers here in Dallas... nothing like that at all

I know!!!

jakevance 06-14-11 03:45 PM

That was pretty tame compared to my old morning commute, actually.

youngandcurious 06-14-11 03:59 PM

Hahahah that truck driver was a goon

jakevance 06-14-11 04:08 PM

But yeah, that truck u-turn was great. Reminds me of the time I watched a similar bigass truck back up through an entire city block to park outside a store he had passed.

Whew, you gotta be brave to get around in NYC in ANY way.

Makes me kinda glad to live in the south in a way. People do look at me like I'm some kind of wizard for riding in busy roads, but this does cause them to give me PLENTY of room and right of way, even when I quite frankly don't deserve it.

dontpassthefenc 06-14-11 05:23 PM

so much assclownery, its astounding.

gilmatic 06-14-11 09:05 PM

Yeah my friend showed me that video. You've gotta be ******** to ride brakeless in NYC. I gotta say, the worst kind of accident you can get into are versus pedestrians. I got clipped by one dude jaywalking when the light was green and I flew and hurt my hip pretty bad. I wasn't angry at him until he tried to topsy-turvy it on me. If my hip didn't hurt like hell I would've kicked him in the head.

homebrewk 06-15-11 07:01 AM

I'm going to NYC in July and I'll be lucky if I don't get hit by a cyclist/car (we'll be walking most of the time).

All of the pedestrians within the crosswalks had the right of way. NY state law says yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

seau grateau 06-15-11 01:25 PM

Incorrect. The road belongs to me and I have right of way at all times.

inmemoryofpluto 06-15-11 10:04 PM

Nothing sucks more than cars that don't feel that bikes deserve to be on the road. Except maybe bikers feeling a sense of entitlement to the entire road.

I was vaguely referring to the ones standing idly in the crosswalk, and the ones walking in strange arcs outside the painted lines. Does that law apply in all states? I've assumed it's in the books here in Cali but I'm not certain.

pylea 06-15-11 10:47 PM

Yuck.

I was in Portland last month and was totally shocked at how courteous all the drivers were. Yielded to pedestrians and bikers even when they had the right of way! It was crAaaAaaAAaaAzy.

Northwestrider 06-15-11 11:28 PM

great video, the 180 degree turn by the truck was amazing. Everyone in a hurry:twitchy:

PandaSPUR 06-16-11 06:56 AM

Haha, its odd, I walk around NYC all the time and all of this is like.. normal to me.

It seems to be normal for most of the people in the video too. Notice how the pedestrians barely react when cars aggressively yield, don't yield at all, or when a bike passes through them haha.
