Phil + DuraAce?

Got my new wheel today, (Phil highflange laced to campy montreal rim) and went to put a duraace cog on it, and it appears that the cog is too wide, leaving only maybe 2-3 threads for the lockring. My friend at the shop tried to call Phill Wood about compatability issues but couldn't get an answer. Anyone know anything about it? Phil users - what kind of cogs do you use? Thanks.

A little ways down the front page is this thread:

brent says DA are the best bet until the phil cogs come out in a few months.

I have used DA and EAI on phils. I'm not sure what's going on with your situation, though. A photo would certainly help. Some of the phil lockrings are chamfered (sp?) and may have more thread engagement than it looks like they would.

i use a d-a just fine. also try to email them cuz they respond quick in my experience.

hate to bump back an old thread, but i'm having the same problem. Only about half the lockring threads engage on my new hub. Not riding it until someone tells me it's safe. Please tell me it's safe.

I just checked my Phil - should be fine. I'm using a EAI (which is the same as a DA). As long as you can crank it down, I'd rest easy.

my new DA cog fitfine on my phil hub, with plenty of room for lockring engagement.

weird that some people have this problem and others do not...

Can someone confirm that this is incorrect. My EAI and DA cogs are visibly different in width and general construction.

I had a similar sizing problem between a Suzue hub and a EAI cog. I could only get my lockring on a turn or so with the EAI but could easily fit with the DA. Having my lockring only fit on a turn or so actually roughed up the threads hub and took some delicate work to get the lock ring back on after replacing the cog, so I would suggest not riding on the wheel until you can get your lock ring on correctly.

My EAI and DA cogs look as different as possible, with significantly different dimensions.
I wonder if some DA cogs look different than other DA cogs.
The different experiences with Phil hubs and DA cogs could come from variations in the cogs and not in the hubs.

What's the story here? Is there a DA Phil problem? Are you guys that are running DA cogs on new Phil hubs just dealing with partial thread engagement? I mean, are you just dealing with the fact that the lock ring is only engaging only part of the threads?

I would say they are not the same. don't EAI say 'Made in USA'?

yes, a little less than half of the threads on my phil lockring are engaged with a 16T DA cog on there. i imagine it would be ok, seeing as how the phil lockring is about twice as wide as the DA lockring that was on my old surly hub. But, i'd rather see all the threads engaged. Guess i'll just have to get a phil cog. Boo Hoo.

Shiznaz 05-22-05 08:51 AM

Those phil cogs look oh so tasty though....

absntr 05-22-05 10:18 AM

I thought they were - sorry. I was looking at MY old DA cogs and the new EAI cogs and from a glance they look the same - I should take a closer look.

I think I also came to that conclusion because DA cogs go small while EAI go large.

I do think that's odd that the Phil hub wouldn't take the cog though.

Yeah this is my conclusion too. If the DA is too wide, an EAI will be worse. Call phil already! You cant use the DA lockring? (dumb question?)

This whole issue just got covered on another thread on this forum:

so your solution is basically for me to go buy a bunch of cogs till i find one that fits? No thanks, I'd like something standard if you don't mind.

I actually tried to grind a DA cog down today, so that more lockring threads would engage, and ended up with a DA cog that was too short, and needs a spacer.

But all that aside, there's no reason that these things shouldn't fit together. I'll see what phil has to say tomorrow, but all in all it has been a sh*tty experience.

Jaminsky 05-22-05 05:33 PM

I have a black phil filp-flop with a 16t DA cog on one side and just a lockring chilling on the other. I just double checked to make sure what was going on and it looks like at its tightest, the phil lockring seems to show a thread (with no cog). The side with the cog has two threads showing. So I figure it's one more than normal. I'm really not worried at all, but I will be buying a Phil cog when the come out anyway, you should do the same.

A little bit of the blue LocTite will help keep it in place.
