track limits you to the track, road limits you to how far your legs will take you
which is more important? |
Both?
|
Track is cheaper, safer, more races, and more variety. Plus it is more fun.
|
Should I upgrade the wheels on my track bike to Archetypes laced to New Sheriff or Novatec hubs or upgrade my cross bike(stem, seatpost, bars)?
|
Wheels.
|
If.the cross biek fits, then wheels. If it doesn't fit, cockpit.
|
You think the wheels would be an improved difference over the Alex R450 ones I have now? I did the math and the weight savings would just be almost a pound, which I could almost achieve by switching out the spokes to Sapim lasers

I was going to build up the Archetypes with Sapim Laser spokes, but if I just replaced the straight gauge spokes on my current wheelset they would be a similar weight as the archetypes. That is what I meant to say.
|
No way you're cutting that much weight using lasers.

Haha. Damn. My math must suck then. Oh well.
You still think the archetypes would be a better improvement for the money? |

Yeah, I have to agree with this. Lasers are obviously lighter than straight-gauge spokes but they're not made of magic.
Those would be heavy. |

I'm new to the track myself, and I already agree with you 100% on the first 4 points. Although I'm new to it, I had a blast at the track last summer and look forward to this year on the track. I had at least as much fun as I have during a typical crit. |
I have done very little road racing. Maybe only 5 crits. I raced a season of nothing but track, then figured I would give crits a try. I gave it a good shot, but never had fun with them.
|
If i crit is untechnical (no serious cornering, no punchy hills) than the track is pretty much funner every time imo.
the only time crits approach the fun of track ime is when they are super technical (cornering is fun) and/or involve punchy big ring hills to string **** out. at 150lbs i seem to excel in big ring climbs (shallow gradients) and uphill sprints but crits that are cool like that are like less than 1/3 of what is on the calender in socal so eff that noise. most of them are boring as industrial park crits that are pancake flats with no techy turn sections. lame. track >>>> industrial park crits |
Should I put origin 8 tiki bars on my beater instead of drop bars?
kinda want to try mustache bars. |

Should I swap my Thomson stem/seatpost for 3T, I think I like the look a little more, and need to change stem sizes anyway.
Also, swap the Romin out for an Arione or Antares? |

Also, swap the Romin out for an Arione or Antares? As for the saddles. Have you ridden either one of those? I can't speak for your butt although I do have a arione & kurve snake in the cycle and they are among my favorites. If you're thinking of buying an arione, there's a design overhaul coming this year, which means you can either wait for the redesign or the clearance of old models. |
I have not tried Fizik saddles yet, the Romin has been so far the most tolerable saddle I've ever ridden. I'll be able to swap back if I want, but it's a big leap since Fizik saddles seem pretty expensive.
I only want to try because I feel that the flat Arione or Antares might be more comfortable. Concerning 3T vs Thomson, I remember Scrod listing the weight of 3T as more than twice the weight of Thomson parts. Is there an explanation for that if my memory serves correct? (Usually doesn't) |
3T does carbon and Thomson does aluminum.
|
Fizik is one of the companies that does a try out program. Go to your area racer shop and put down a deposit, then you can try each saddle for a week or so.
