Starting to desire a brake on either my Kilo or my Mash. Problem is neither of them have viable front wheels (yes ellipse is machined but why needlessly wear the black off?).

Considering purchasing a MSW black Aerospoke to run the brake on. . .

Should I?

Seriously? I can't imagine seeing a 'spok on your Mash. Maybe your Kilo, but even then it's pushing it.

Get a front Kinlin XR-270 build kit from Scrod. He can sell you just one instead of both.

Unless aforementioned spohk is $75 or less, the answer is no.

Physically pick one up and you will have your answer.

hamish5178 10-16-11 09:19 PM

But a machined wheel is just so boring :(

redpear 10-16-11 09:22 PM

Damn, listen to this hater.

I like it :P

Should I put drops and hoods on this? I like the feeling of hoods and drops more than riser bars but I don't know if it will look too out of place. Probably would need a longer stem to pull it off since the fork is hueg liek xbox

Maybe the correct answer to my aerospoke question was "disc brake"

hm...

jdgesus 10-16-11 09:34 PM

mountain drops

EpicSchwinn 10-16-11 10:07 PM

I thought about mountain drops but I think they look awkwardly wide. I was thinking more along the lines of anatomic drops. For the most part I just use this bike to get around campus and I would like it to be a little more useful for 3-10mi trips.

If you're considering a composite wheel with a machined braking surface, 850g Lolergy > 2500g Arrospok. Also cheaper and more suspenseful to ride.

This is certainly a way to put it.

+1 on the disc brake.

Should I sell my Nitto RB-021's and buy compact drops+hoods for my schwinn? I find neither my RB's or my Road Champ drops to be comfortable in any one position for more than 10 minutes.

think of the street cred lost on your Mash if it has a brake! just slowly wear off the paint of a wheel you already have. or splurge..

Sugino grand mighty FTW. I've seen way too many builds with record pista's.

You could always get a Dura-Ace crankset...

yummygooey 10-23-11 11:15 AM

Depends what build it's going on.

depends on the bike.
european bikes go with campy
japanese bikes go with sugino
american brands it's a toss up

i ran a brake on a non-machined side wall for a while and the paint didn't really rub off, it just made it look shiny. plus if you're used to riding brakeless you probably won't use the brake much anyway. just do it. bike components are meant to be used and take wear and tear.

street cred depends on which street you're on.
