800 or 810?
i really want the live tracking feature but i didnt know you needed to sync it to your phone via bluetooth the whole time. reason i wanted the garmin was to free up my phone during rides (and more accurate data)
are the maps worth it over the 500/510?

Anyway, the live track feature is nice and it doesn't really hurt your phone battery all that much when you sync the two together. You'll want to do that, every cool feature about the 510/810 uses your phone - live weather reports, live track, automatic upload of rides, etc. I just sync over bluetooth before the ride and throw the phone in my pocket never to look at it again. You will need the garmin connect app on your phone to sync the two. It's also nice to be able to send courses to the device using your phone as well. You basically never need to attach the garmin to your computer.
The 510 offers a breadcrumb feature for courses you've drawn out beforehand... you basically follow a line on the screen to get where you're going. It's efficient enough if you know somewhat where you're going, or don't make a turn every block. Some times the screen locks and doesn't rotate fast enough so you're left wondering if you're supposed to turn right again or continue straight. Then it yells "off course" at you and you have no idea where you should be going.
The 810 offers turn-by-turn mapping directions, but still has it's issues, although with recent firmware updates it's gotten better. It seems to have an problem with courses, especially if the start/end are near the same location. If you start the course from your drive way and the "end location" is on the street before the official "start location" it tells you your virtual partner has finished before you and the entire ride it tells you to make a u-turn and go back. I've gotten around this by starting a ride like normal and then searching for the course once I'm riding.
Other than the screen being bigger and the turn-by-turn directions, they're the same unit. The only reason I got the 810 was wiggle had the performance bundle on sale for $400 - it had the UK maps, but I just used Open Street Maps to get the US maps.

So, instead of pouring more money into the VISP with its boat anchor frame and fork, should I simply buy a new Dolan Precursa frameset with a carbon fork, headset, seatpost and clamp for about $300 USD + shipping from the UK, and swap out all the components ? I'd opt for the Dolan fork instead of the Alpina for the same price so that I can mount a front brake. Since I don't use a rear brake, it doesn't matter that the Dolan frame lacks a brake mount. I could then sell the VISP frameset including the headset and seatpost for maybe $100 ? The VISP seatpost is an oddball 27.4mm size, so I have no use for it anyway. All the components are good quality and should swap out w/o any problems. What say all you experts ?

Should I get one of those seat post aqua racks for longer rides during summer in PHX, or should I just carry a third bottle in my jersey pocket and call it good?

Yeah, I use the 24oz camelback podium big chills, usually freeze one completely, and the other half way...but still, when the temps are high, I can easily drink one an hour if I'm really hammering away. This means, if I'm out longer than two hours I need to find water...which usually results in nasty hot water out of a drinking fountain.
I'll try the jersey and see how it works out, the insulated bottle shouldn't be too damp on the back.

I've been tempted to go into gas stations, but when I'm on the road bike, I don't have a lock with me and feel like a dork walking in with full kit and bike shoes.

swallow your pride.
If I decided to bring an extra bottle i just go ahead and carry two in the jersey pockets because it is more comfortable than one in the middle pocket. But I will need a saddle wedge to then carry my spare tube/wallet/phone

Swallowing my pride seems far more economical than spending $45 on something I don't really want in the first place. Works for me.
Thanks for the words of reason, everyone!

On the topic of Pre Cursas, should I run my wheels off my cheap fixie for my Pre Cursa build? Wheels are Joytech hub with no name aluminum rims. My LBS trued them and replaced some spokes about 6 months ago so they are are in good shape for what they are. I am already over my budget on the build so my options are:
A. Buy a good but not great wheelset for now such as these Sun/Formula wheels for $120 now:

B. Transfer over my current wheelset and save money for about 6 months and then buy a better wheelset for $200-300?

Should I buy a relatively new black full carbon trek time trial frame w/ chris king headset for $190 even though I dont time trial or have any significant use for it? My only thought on what to do with it is to throw a spare sora groupset onto it which seems a little odd.
