fixie help.

i'm a college student and i dont have much money to spend but i really want a fixie. i wanna spend around 300. im a noob at bikes so i was wondering what are the best brands? would it be better to buy it online or local bike shop? i live in LA or Santa Barbara. HELP Plz. thanks.
