Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

What gearing to use on single speed ?

What would be a good gearing set up on a single speed used for very rough, hilly off road riding ?

42 x 17 or 42 x 18?

I run 42 x 15 and I live in the mountains, but I wouldn't say the terain is super rough or anything like that.

Assuming you are talking about a MTB SS for offroad riding, the standard is 2:1 32/16. Personally on my MTB SS I run a 44/16 but she never sees dirt, mostly a bar hopper.

I ran my SS MTB at 40/16 as that's how it came setup when I bought from a guy. It was great downhill but I thought I was going to rip my arms out of the sockets climbing. I picked up a 20t freewheel last night and it's so much nicer. Spin like hell though. Wow.

around here people that ride ss mtb's will even run lower than 2:1, especially with a 29"er. 2:1 is a great starting point though. what size wheels does this bike have? a 2:1 feels different on a 29"er vs a 26" and so on...

You are right. I run 2:1 on my 26" MTB and 36x20 on my 29er. Both are 52 gear inches.

I run, on 26"ers, 32x18 around here and it's kept me climbing so far.
