Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Cross Check Build - Done

Just thought I'd drop a line.

I finished my Cross Check build from start to finish. This was my first build and it's purpose is to serve as a commuter bike, approx 20 mi. round trip ever day.

The build was as follows:
Cross Check Black Frame
Sugino 75 Crank
Miche Primato BB
Surly 18T Cog
Thomson Seatpost and Stem
Chris King Headset
Tektro Ergo Brakes and Cantis
Mavic Open Pros to Formula Hubs
Schwalbe Marathon Plus'
A cheapy CL seat/drop bars
MKS Lambda pedals

Took a few days and forgotten parts to finish it, but it's all complete. I've ridden it twice so far, and the fixed gear change definitely makes you feel alive.

Thanks for all the forum posts helping me to decide on parts.

Awesome, congrats! Drive side pics please. (It's a sin not to highlight that 75 crank. Nobody puts baby in a corner....)

Add 2 links on that chain! You want that axle as far back as possible!
Looks nice otherwise. Nice conversion

Bikes: Too many bikes, too little time to ride

How about a rear rack and some panniers?

Rear rack and panny are currently on my girlfriends bike. I'll gank it soon!

Foot retention, I'm running cages on my road bike... Not the biggest fan. Any recommendations?

have you tried strap type foot retention like holdfast or something similar? i prefer the strap setup more than regular clips/straps.

How about clipless? You can get a good pair of pedals for under $50 and some good shoes for under $80 or so if you look pretty hard.

Straps are awful, clipless is way worth it
