Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Bikes: 2010 Specialized Langster

Hello from NYC!

Hey guys, just picked up my first road bike yesterday. I got a 2010 Specialized Langster from my local bike shop on clearance.

I rode it home yesterday, only about a 5min ride. So today I went for my first "real" ride on it. I did about 10 miles and I loved it! Doing the same ride on my MTB, I would feel tired, but not on the Langster.

Congrats! I'm also in NYC, and am fairly new to the SSFG scene as well.

Enjoy your bike

It makes perfect sense that you'd be more tired on a knobby-tired mountain bike. They're much less efficient when riding on the road.

MTBs are heavier, have wider tires, and are just generally not that great on the roads.

+1

Gears or no gears, MTB bikes are remarkably inefficient on roads just with the tires alone. Add front suspension and it gets worse. Add full suspension and it very very inefficient.

RobF353, welcome to SSFG!!

Yet you see more of them ridden on the road than anything else. People are weird.

With about 30 psi in them.

I once stopped at an auto repair shop to see about getting some air for my tires. The guy asked me how many PSI I needed from the compressed air machine. I said maybe 110 or 120psi. His eyes almost fell out of his head. He laughed at me like I was an idiot. When I left, I'm sure he went inside and was like, "Frank, check this. That idiot said he wanted OVER ONE HUNDRED PSI in his BICYCLE TIRES!!! LOL."
