fixie accident

Yesterday while bombing a hill I took my feet out of my straps and put my feet on the down tube to ride out the hill. When I went to put my feet back on the pedals, my foot flew off, and went right into the front wheel, causing to break 6 spokes and sending me head first over the handle bars. I fractured my cheek bone, and got a concussion. Ive been in the Hospital for 2 days and finally got released today. I wasn't wearing a helmet, so my next purchase is one. Im so lucky I didnt get seriously damaged.

jesus christ, next time slow things down a bit with some shoe to the tire action before going right back into the straps maybe.

I'm surprised you aren't more ****ed up to be honest, but that looks painful still. glad you're okay

Jaytron 08-13-11 02:57 PM

I don't know if your looking for pity or not, because I don't feel bad for you at all, but it's nice to see that you're not too badly injured.

You did some pretty stupid ****ing **** and payed for it. Lucky you're not ****ing dead.

I mean, did you really think it would be a good idea to take a fixed gear bike, bomb down a hill with no brakes, and in addition take your feet off the pedals, your only means of stopping? Helmet or not, that sounds pretty damn stupid to me.

shadoman 08-13-11 02:59 PM

Nice to see you made it through. A helmet isn't a bad idea, especially if you're going to do hillbombs with your feet unsecured.
On the other hand, looking at your injuries... A helmet probably wouldn't have helped much.
Brakes might be a better purchase first.

spazzkid 08-13-11 03:06 PM

Sorry to hear about your accident. Like what people said, run a brake and wear a helmet next time. Be safe!

Leukybear 08-13-11 03:10 PM

Get well soon! You should feel lucky; the picture doesn't look that bad compared to the description of what happened. Don't push it next time.

If there were any girls around; you just lost 2 inches.

I'm sorry, but that is ********. I dont really have an issue with riding brakeless or without a helmet, but to do that and then take your feet out of your pedals going down hill... thats asking for it.

yummygooey 08-13-11 04:14 PM

Sigh...

Glad you're relatively ok, though.

homebrewk 08-13-11 04:17 PM

I'm sorry that happened. The moral of the story: always wear your helmet and be extra-careful. Hope you get well soon!

Brakeless, LOL.

xkillemallx16 08-13-11 04:50 PM

i hate to say it now that you're hurt, but if you're gonna ride brakeless, be responsible about it.

Yeah I ted shred with my feet off the pedals sometimes too, and while it's definitely not as safe as a brake, if you do it right, you can manage your speed pretty well and re-clip when you slow down. obviously if you're bombing long, steep hills, that might not be the best way to do things, but if you're on a slight decent down a straightaway, I don't see much harm in it.

Definitely just be more responsible about it in the future. And wear a helmet. And if you're riding a lot of hills, consider getting a/some brake(s).

This. I do it on occasion too but I have enough sense to know what's "too fast" for certain things. If something feels really sketchy, it usually is.

Oh yeah, and this.

Glad you didn't die, Pat!

Dannihilator 08-13-11 06:22 PM

Glad to see that you are alive.

Helmets people. While you say it won't happen to you, it will eventually catch up to you when you least expect it to happen.

porkch0p 08-13-11 06:50 PM

good to hear a fellow fger is ok. hope you feel better.

Brakes might be a better purchase first.

A helmet might have prevented or at least reduced the concussion.

And BTW, I don't see where the OP stated he was brakeless; just that he was riding fixed and took his feet off the pedals.

Infidel79 08-13-11 08:41 PM

Wow...op has taken a lot of abuse...we all have done dumb stuff, but we don't all own up to it publicly. I think the op is trying to help others learn from his mistake. Btw, pic looks fresh...the bruising will be epic. Helmet is a good idea in general, but idk if it would have helped much.
