Question about cranksets....and headsets

I have a relatively dorky question to axe about cranksets--when I built my fixed gear, I just went ahead and used the ancient BB and double chainring/crankset that came with my bike. I find it to be hideously ugly, and instead of dremelling the outside chainring down, I would like to pick up a single chainring/crank/bb combo--what would you folks suggest I pick up for a mid 80s centurion Lemans? From my fruitless forum searching, some of you are rocking BMX cranks, and some are riding on track cranks? I'm pretty cornfused.

Additionally, I went with the old stem/dropbars/headset (all in the name of saving cost), but I want to switch it out to bulls--i'm afraid that the current stem is incredibly old, squeaky, and probably not compatible....

anyways, thanks in advance for helping out my silly a$$.

Well, basically the track stuff is going to cost a good bit more than the bmx stuff. Check out the old stand by, Sheldon Brown (has there been a day on this forum that his name was not mentioned?). The Bulletproof cranks seem to be good for the money. Your LBS could hook you up with a decent bottom bracket to go with them (they could probably order the cranks for you too).

I'm sure you could find some bullhorns to fit your steam. You might just want to take the headset apart and re-grease everything.

Hope that helps, good luck.

For a set of bulls, just cut off your existing drops. They fit already. As for the cranks, are both chainrings removable? If so just remove the one you don't want. just get the BMX chainring bolts (the thinner ones).

Good luck

I thought about the cutting, I just don't like how short the arms look on cutoff drops. As for the chainring, the 39t chainring I use is attached to the larger chainring, and that in turn is attached to the crank. (!)

It's a real bummer.

You could always grind off the teeth on the larger chainring to turn it into a chainguard...

Nice. That's the cleanest job I've seen yet.

Void...I would just get a set of bulletproof cranks with a rocket ring. Combo should only be around $35.

Thanks! But I cheated... One of my friend's dad is a lifelong machinist from scotland and he really knows his stuff. He was nice enough to do it for me for free; its an excessively pro job, perfectly even, shiny and beveled at the corners.

aww, shinaz...here's a hug. YOURS looks real nice....but MY chainring looks like ca-ca on a stick. If I filed those teeth off, itd be the equivalent of polishing a turd.

bulletproof cranks, and a rocket ring. OK. I wonder if I have to change my BB for that...
where can I pick those two items up on-the internets? other than harriscyclery......

Thanks!

nope, its a Centurion LeMans with God-Knows-What-The-Hell-The-Cranks-Are.

Although today, I did mistake a Schwinn LeTour for my bike. I screamed like a girl "ooh! thats my bike!!" and then got closer and said "uh...I had something in my eye."

heres what it looks like completely

it now has a specialized body geometry saddle, and eggbeaters.
