I've spent the last 6yrs over in the MTB forum...we don't use that type of language there.

I was reading a FB update from an old friend of mine in Brooklyn, NY. He posted a pic of "his whip".

What gives? I know people say it, but where'd it come from?

I'm not sure of the origins, but I've heard cars referred to as whips before.

Here's the answer from Urban Dictionary (not the most reliable source of information, but in this case it sounds correct): When the steering wheel was first put into use in automobiles, it was called the "whip". The whip is what you used to control the horses on a stagecoach, hence the analogy. Many years later, various hip hop artists noticed that the Mercedes-Benz logo resembled a steering wheel. They then proceeded to use the old term "whip" to describe any Mercedes-Benz vehicle. The term has now been generalized to classify any expensive automobile.

derp. I used to really be into paintball and the slang was along the same lines. 14 year old kids with markers and gear costing upwards of $1500 would constantly refer to their markers as "gats". Annoyed the crap out of me.

Just as long as we don't start calling them G-rides or something. I swear, the more "advanced" our society gets...the further we drop our drawers. My grandkids probably won't even be wearing pants...they'll be rollin up on they Schwinn G-Rides, fillin' they gats with markers...gettin' respect.

Thought this was going to be a question about chain whips. I now feel older than I am.

I know people that talk like this. I cannot decipher what it is they try to convey. Sometimes it is comical.

It's an old slang word referring to a carriage driver's whip, and it usually meant steering wheel. The saying was later adapted to simply refer to a car, and later- bicycle.

Good lord... the list goes on with all the AGG kiddies playing paintball. HK this - HK that, trim the bottom of your JT mask or zip-tie it, hang a tailfeather off your pants, wear a Gucci or Burberry pattern headband, etc. etc.

is HK Army still cool? i really hated all the AGG bs and the patterned "sandanas". For awhile, paintball just turned into a fashion show for rich kids. It's the reason I avoided speedball, been playing pump for 6 years.

somewhat on topic: The clipless setup I ordered for my "whip" should arrive tomorrow morning. stoked. I'm ready for some 0mph falls.

In a sense it's actually gotten worse. They don't really say AGG anymore; they just say "H" or "HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH". They've become much more commercialized by selling HK shoes, beer packs that look like pod harnesses, snapback hats, shirts, pants, etc. They're also supporting their own bands and what not.

Look for yourself... if you dare: https://hollywoodhk.com/

You're absolutely right, though, tourneyball went downhill around 2002+.
