Annoying Internet diagnosis help needed.

When I put heavy backward resistance on my Omnium crankset there is a pretty loud single "pop" sound. When I then put pressure pedaling forward I get another single "pop" sound. I just regreased and retightened all the components and the sound still persists. The sound seems to be coming from the non-drive side BB/crank arm area.

Cog and locking are tight. No pedal or chain issues. No other noise while riding, everything feels smooth. I know there is not much that can be done via a forum, but is there anything else I should check or do? Should I completely disassemble and reassemble?

Tighten bolts on the chainring where it attaches to crank.

Your BB is probably toast. The stock GXP BB that comes with Omniums & S300s is sometimes problematic. I say "sometimes" because I know people who have used it without much fuss at all and others (myself included) who have blown up five or six of them in a row. The first sign is that audible 'pop', followed by increasing side to side play - regardless of how tight the NDS bolt is.

If you plan on keeping the Omniums for the long run, invest in a Chris King or Phil Wood outboard bearing BB. You'll thank me.

I've literally seen it happen right out of the box.

Omniums are excellent track cranks but the stock BB can be pretty shoddy. I suppose it's Sram's way of keeping the cost down when compared to other name-brand 144 bcd cranksets.

What do you think of the Leader Renovatio? It's not a popular bike, so there aren't many words on it. I'm looking at that and a cinelli vigorelli.

Both are excellent. Get whichever one you think will look best with your slammed stem.

well, I'm just going by what I see. And I see a million vigorellis, a millions kageros, but no renovatios. Thanks, I'll choose wisely! I also may ditch the build and go with a Caad10.

Does Leader still sell road bike frames? I don't want one, but I remember seeing them once on a blog post/forum post, and never heard of them again.

They've made quite a few over the years that have mostly gone under the radar because that's not what they're known for. Most notably (in recent years anyway) were the steel 722RS and the full carbon Mark 1 - neither of which are still in production.

My high school cycling club's adviser is trying to get Leader to sponsor(?) them, or get some kind of group buy going. From what I have seen, they're all primarily roadies, so I wasn't sure how well that's going to work out for them.

Campy Gruppo - chorus derailleur with updated brifters, cranks, front derailleur, modolo brakes (brake pads are rock hard), hubs (laced to mavic rims), columbus tubing, 3T stem/bars, old hard michelin tires, look clipless, modern velo seat (replacement).
Basically looking for inspiration in any direction. I can't decide if I want this to be a townie/commuter or whether it's so nice I need to keep it all original and use it for the occasional 30 mile ride or cruise around the park.
I was considering ordering a pair of MKS pedals/clips/leather straps from you as I definitely want to do away with the clipless, new tires, brake pads ect. Part of me wants to put a pair of townie bars on this for some reason...

I know upgrading a $400 bike is probably a silly idea but every bike I get I can't leave well enough alone. I've already ordered pedals/cages/straps from your shop. (Great stuff/prompt service,thanks) Changed those hideous tires and now I am thinking of a direction to go? On one hand I was thinking classic brown turbo saddle/ brown bar tape and diff. Wheels (Something deeper) but probably silver? My other idea comes from my love of mid 90s MTB fashion and Ringle components to be exact, think purple track bars/purple wheels?
Not sure if the purple would clash and just be absolutely hideous?


I plan on commuting but want to get out to our local track here in NJ at least a few times this year.

Hello, just needed some insight of yours. I am currently building my first bike, I have a 2010 Specialized Langster.
I just bought some shimano 600EX fc-6207 Cranks on Ebay for $27, only because I thought it was a good deal and a very clean set (although it seemed like maybe I only saved a few dollars, did not come with chainring, but had bolts and dustcap). It hasn't shipped yet, but I was mostly concerned about how it was 170mm in length. I did some research however, and some say that 170 mm might be too much for a langster which has a lower BB? Should I just get rid of it and buy an eightinch crankset?

Brown saddle & tape gets my vote but I'd steer clear of track drops for commuting or riding on the street. Bars are easy to swap out if you end up on the track.

Also, keep it classy.

Shimano EX is a nice crank but if they're the wrong length, you didn't get a good deal.

Do you typically use 170mm crank arms? I used 170mm for a long time and never really had any trouble with pedal strike. However, I put 165mm on my Raleigh and realized that 5mm actually does make a noticeable difference and like it much better.

I don't have any actual experience with any of those tires but have always liked Ruffy Tuffys. If they came in 27" I'd definitely be rocking them on my townie.

did velocity discontinue the Ti Grey rim color? i can't seem to find it anywhere. if so, do you happen to know of another rim that matches that color? my first thought is the hard anodized h plus son archetype.. but that seems a little dark.

any thoughts?

That color was discontinued years ago.

Hard anodized H+Son rims tend to vary from batch to batch. We've received some that were light grey and others that were nearly black.
