Ask Scrod

As requested by Street Rider, here's the thread that was bound to happen sooner or later. Please keep in mind that there is already a Retrogression thread in the marketplace, where updates and answers to questions about stuff we sell are posted on a regular basis.

Bombs away!

rustybrown 09-18-11 08:28 PM

First...?

Edit: For real though..where's the secret stash of those Black Flag Bikeage shirts?

Scrodzilla 09-18-11 08:31 PM

Rusty! You didn't read my opening post!

Leukybear 09-18-11 08:43 PM

Dear Dave,

Did you create this thread to take some load off of poor Ol' Carleton?

hamfoh 09-18-11 08:50 PM

Carelton thread is for those who want their future purchases to come with a cup of buzzkill when he tells you why Cinelli, Bianchi, H+Son etc are pieces of crap :D (I kid)

Dear Scrod, do you wash your hair

Street rider 09-18-11 09:00 PM

So, to basically continue that little conversation from earlier, would this work as a BB replacement since they actually have 107?

hamfoh 09-18-11 09:03 PM

what bb tool did you use for your protype?

max5480 09-18-11 09:04 PM

^that's funny.

but srslys, everyone is going to ask you about stuff you sell. like, for instance, who makes your foot straps? Even though I'd be paying 20$ more, should I support a company that hand makes them right in my own home town?! I think the answer is yes. However, this question could be regarded as an ethical question regarding the economics involved in supporting online stores vs local production practices. Speaking of which, HAmfOH, you should get a LOW if you really want one.

hairnet 09-18-11 09:10 PM

 What about Deputy Hairnet?

hamfoh 09-18-11 09:17 PM

let's say all Leader frames evaporate into thin air and the company does the same. What kind of frame would Scrod be on? (realistically priced)

calv 09-18-11 09:21 PM

^Dodici Gara :P

seau grateau 09-18-11 09:21 PM

Dear Scrod,
Do you think you're better than Carleton?

Dannihilator 09-18-11 09:55 PM

Dear scrod,

Boxxers or Briefs?

fixedgear80 09-18-11 10:03 PM

Scrod? Any pictures of you before the Dreadlocks?
http://naani.com/Articles/content_im.../chineyman.jpg

jimmytango 09-18-11 10:11 PM

What's your life story Scrod? What makes you, you?

Also, wtf with the hair man? My **** wouldn't do that if I tried.

Squirrelli 09-18-11 11:54 PM

EpicSchwinn 09-19-11 01:06 AM

Can we unsticky some stuff? 10 threads is pretty ridiculous. I'm not calling out this thread specifically but I'm sure there's something up there you can drop.

you should just make a subforum for formerly stickied threads :P

hairnet 09-19-11 01:15 AM

Can you hannel et?

Scrodzilla 09-19-11 05:58 AM

Wow...look at me starting a thread like this and going to bed. I'm off to a great start!

Not really to take some of the load off of him but more because people were starting to ask me specific questions in his thread. I feel the "Dear Carleton" thread has been a big success and asset to the forum and he's been amazing with keeping up with it and answering certain types of questions.

Occasionally, yes. I usually just rinse it really well when in the shower because shampoo actually contains chemicals that make your hair unhealthy, which is how they are able to convince you that you must also purchase expensive conditioners and other "hair care" products. When I do, it's with Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap.

Yes, but you can find it cheaper.

Park Tool BBT-22. Pro tip: get yourself a 2" bolt with the same threads as a standard crank arm bolt and thread it into your spindle (through the BB tool) to keep it from falling off while you're installing/removing.

Really, there's already a thread about this that a lot of people frequent. To answer your question though (which I feel is less about product and more about ethics) - our straps are hand made by myself, Angie and a friend of ours. We're in no way a giant "online retailer" and by buying stuff from the Retrogression site, you're still supporting small independent business run by people who are doing things their own way. I do understand wanting to buy local though.

I'm going to start a thread called that.

I've got to run but I'll get to anything I didn't answer after I get some work done.

Jaytron 09-19-11 08:13 AM

Dear Scrod,

How was your weekend? Do anything interesting?

Philthy Bastard 09-19-11 08:27 AM

Keith Morris, Ron Reyes, Dez Cadena, or Henry Rollins?

Decepticondc5 09-19-11 08:34 AM

not really question, just comment:
I love how you run your online shop and only carry more or less sensible products at correct prices. There is just the right balance of form/function/price throughout the store.

question: how do i wrap these lizard skins so they don't slide down my bars? My roommate did his bars last week and the wrap seems to be sliding. Is this a normal problem for the lizard skins? All i have heard on here is that they are the shiz.

Scrodzilla 09-19-11 08:58 AM

Okay, I'm back for round two.

This is a tough one and I'll back it with some brief history for those who may not know why I ride Leaders. As some of you may know, Leader approached me to design some shirts for them a while back and through that agreement, they hooked us up with some free stuff. I was impressed - not only by the frames we received but also by how chill they are and how easy it was to work with them. As we began dealing with them more and developing actual friendships, I quickly realized that they really are a good company with great customer service who are really making every effort to get out from the bad rep they once had and have the product to back it. Walking like you talk it has always been an important quality in my eyes. As one who always tends to be somewhat supportive of the "underdog", I see Leader for what they are and have respect for what they're doing. Honestly, if I thought their products were crap and everyone who worked there treated us like ********, I simply wouldn't ride their frames - free or not.

That being said and getting back to hammy's question, I think my steel bike would be a Bareknuckle or Godzilla. My aluminum bike would most likely be a Dodici Gara (although the 2012 model doesn't do as much for me as last year's) or a Livery Aluminum Aero - or both. :)

Different, yes. Better, no.

Boxers (or commando in the summer) when I'm off the bike, boxer briefs or seamless compression shorts when I'm riding - unless it's a long ride, then I'm rocking Pearl Izumi liners beneath my shorts.

****, I'll be here all day. The book will come out someday.

My dreads are zero effort. I literally just stopped brushing it.

I reviewed all the stickies and they all have good reason to stay stuck. If anyone feels differently, let me know.

Does that have something to do with deapthroating a bratwurst?

I'll be back in a bit.

homebrewk 09-19-11 09:16 AM

Dear Scrod,

How do you carry your stuff while riding? Do you put in a jersey? Or do you carry a hip pack? (I'm not even going to ask if you have a saddlebag...) And what do you carry too?

max5480 09-19-11 09:19 AM

Thanks man!

It was great! Friday night I finished building my wheels. Saturday we slept in a bit, made breakfast and went out to do some errands. Came back, did some riding then went out for dinner/beers with some friends. Sunday I got up early and did a 50 mile ride for cancer support/research. Ended up doing closer to 65 miles because I took a wrong turn and still made it back before a lot of the roadies. 52/17 FTW.

As much as I do love Keith, Black Flag wasn't dialed in yet when he was singing. Ron was better but Dez kills it. Henry doesn't even count.

Thanks for the good words and for noticing what our motive is.

I've never had that trouble with LizardSkins. are you removing the paper from the little adhesive strip on the back?

When I'm bringing my laptop and a bunch of other crap back and forth between the space and home, my medium Timbuk2 bag works well. If I'm just out riding around for leisure, bar-hopping or whatever and need to carry a lock, it's a hip bag. I'm I'm on an epic ride, it's a jersey and sometimes a small saddle bag to hold tools and such.

I usually always have a stubby 15mm wrench, multi tool, Co2 inflator and a couple of cartridges, self-adhesive patch kit and (usually) a spare tube.

homebrewk 09-19-11 09:34 AM

Cool. And 52/17? Do tell...
