Replacing Tires/Rims/Cog - Questions
I am going to make some changes to my lady's townie and need some help. In case it makes a difference, it looks sort of like this but without the 3-speed. It actually has a flip flop hub.
1st, there are 700 x 28C tires on the bike. My girl is complaining about the bumpy ride, so I'm guessing I should put some bigger tires on there. How do I know what will fit the frame/fork/brake? What can I measure to know if a 32-37 would fit?
2nd, I found a wheel/tire size chart on Sheldon's site, so I have an idea what the inside rim measurement would need to be to fit a 32-37 tire. I don't see any inside rim size on the current rim though. Do I need to remove the tire and measure or is there something else I can measure? Maybe the outside rim size and subtract a standard amount?
3rd, I'm seeing rims for sale with everything from no spokes, hubs, ect to complete wheel sets. If I need to replace the rims, I'd like to go the simplest route. My girl is likely never going to ride fixed. Would it make sense to get something with just a freewheel cog? Would I even be able to find something like that?
Thanks

Why not ....

700c you answered your own ?

you don't need wheels you want larger tires... Go to your lbs and ask the what size you can reasonably fit with out rubbing any wHere, if you can't fit your finger in the spaces between the tire & frame or tire and fork crown, you likely can't go much larger, maybe 700cx30 maybe 32 at the most, if you can fit 2 fingers then possibly up to 42
thanks

I pumped to 85 psi, front & back.
The tightest space is between the wheel & chain stay. My finger is a very tight fit on either side.
I should've also mentioned that we'll be riding on trails that have some dirt and/or gravel. I'm having to reconsider the bike I get for myself as I'll want 30somethings as well. Maybe 40mm.
I plan to visit my lbs this weekend. If we can't do a 35mm, I'm considering new rims. We didn't pay much of anything for the bike any way. Since the tightest space is between the wheel & chain stay, would a 650B wheel make this easier? I'm guessing we'll get another 5-10mm of clearance.

Fresh Garbage
I'm 200lbs+ and I pump my 28s to 80psi. 650b would be cool but will it work with your brakes? it lets you get the same total wheel diameter as ,say, a 700x23 but with a real fat tire

The other possible problem area I see is the space between the wheel and chain stay. In a few articles, the authors mention needing at least 42mm of space between the chain stays at 320mm from the axle to use 650 38Bs. I'm right at 42-43 and not sure how tight of a fit that will be considering differences in tires.
