Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

48/16 doesn't seem as bad as you make it sound. I'm running a 46/13 and that pretty much does the job.

I'm running 52/16..I like it but it's fairly flat where I ride that, oh and that bike sure as hell didn't come from any factory like that.

Bikes: good ones.

Mine came stock with 46-16. About to purchase a 15t. Not very hilly around here but there are couple hills that I am sure I'm going to hate the first few weeks.

I don't know if I am being soft but I live in a very hilly city, I find that everywhere I go I find that with my Vilano SS I am just over geared. Is there a reason why these companies choose this gearing? Is a generic 16 tooth cog that much cheaper than a 17-18? Is less tooth chain ring that much more money? i changed the 16T cog to a 19T cog and my life is easier
Time warp....evidently....

I just switched from 46-16 to 46-15 and it's somewhat hilly around here. I love it nonetheless. I wouldn't mind putting 46-17 on the other side of my hub for more chill rides, but for the most part, I like my current ratio.

Yeah I was thinking about putting two different cogs on my wheel but then I would have to remove my freewheel. I lack the tool right now and I don't feel like buying one.

Just take it to your LBS. Guy told me it'd be $3, but I bought a couple tubes so he didn't charge me at for removing the freewheel. Takes all of 20 seconds for them to do.

Do you really have to bump a 2 week old thread to complain about an issue that has already been addressed?

I'll send you my 32:18 gearing if you promise not to bump this thread ever again
