Pedals shift without the chain moving

Hello!

I just bought a new Bianchi Pista Steel and I have the following problem. When I start pedaling (or brake using pedals) it happens that the pedals will shift but the chain and the rear wheel won't. I tightened the chain but it didn't really help. Maybe something wrong with my crankset? What should I do?

The set up:
Crankset: Truvativ TOURO Track 1.1 48T
Chain: Kmc Z610H
Sprocket: Shimano SS-7600 16T

Just a shot in the dark, but it sounds like chain stretch. If you have a spare from a known good bike try swapping it out and see if that fixes it.

Are you sure it's JUST the pedals moving? What about the crankarms & chainring? My guess is loose chainring bolts - make sure they're all tight and see if it helps.

There is nothing wrong with your cranks. You cog and lockring are loose....you need to get them tightened before you ruin the hub. Its possible that its already ruined.

I don't often agree with mihlbach, but he's right.

+1 cog & lockring

I had that issue when I first started riding fixed and had no idea. It ended up with a ruined hub, cog, lockring, and me clipping a parked car cuz I couldn't stop. Not fun. Get a lockring tool.

OK I tightened cog and lockring. It seems like it solved the problem. I hope...
Thanks guys!

Really?

When it comes down to posting real information, I am actually almost never wrong, not because I am a genius, but because I generally only post when I know what the hell I'm talking about. I can't recall a single instance when you disagreed with me, but numerous instances where you agreed with me.

There are a few times (once recently) when you accused me of being a dillhole, but thats not the same as disagreeing.

Sorry, bro. I shan't place my tongue in my cheek again while you're around.

Thats OK, just keep it out of other orifices.

I feel fully validated that somebody expected this:

I don't think I have ever heard of anyone stripping a hub by rotafixing. The warning about rotafixing is unwarranted, IMO.

It could be a ghost. Who knows.

I doubt its your cog or your lock ring. If it tends to just happen randomly you probably kicked up a rock or a piece of asphalt making your cranks race without it seeming like your wheels moving/you are going anywhere. This happened to me a couple times when i first started riding fixed, threw me for a loop for a minute too.

If your uneasy just take it to your local bike shop to make sure everything is a-okay.

Dude, come on. Have you ever ridden a bike before?

homebrewk 10-24-11 01:57 PM

Seriously... it took me 4 times to read over that before I understood one word of it.

Sweece 10-24-11 03:11 PM

Make sure you tighten that cog and lockring well. The same thing was happening to me and I ended up stripping my hub threads. Superman that cog on!

dsh 10-26-11 08:00 AM

If I were you I'd look into the cog and lockring, paying special attention to the tightness of the two.

Scrodzilla 10-26-11 08:10 AM

No way man. Totally not the cog and lockring.

TejanoTrackie 10-26-11 09:11 AM

Sounds to me like a left-hand drive.
