Gear ratio help
I am building my first singlespeed from a cheap walmart murray mountain bike. My front chain ring has 40 teeth. How many teeth should my rear gear have. This bike is for winter riding and is all flat road riding. I am a relatively strong rider and do not want a gear ratio that i find myself spinning to death. Thanks for any suggestions.

Your rim diameter, tire size, and crank length factor into your gearing. Read up on gear inches and gain ratios....https://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/
For road riding, shoot for a gear ratio that will give you 70-75 gear inches. For offroading, you want to go considerably lower.

If its for winter riding and your area has a lot of snow, ice, slush, etc. You'll want something low as well.
