Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Fixed Gear Century Training

I saw this posted at the Long Distance/Endurance Cycling Forum and decide to repost here as there were inquiries about it a few months back. It might be helpful for people who are looking into riding more miles with their FG.

seems unnecessary/not very fun. but i guess a lot of people do things i don't fully understand. i'd much rather do 150 miles on my road bike.

A century wouldn't be that difficult or bothersome fixed. Even traveling at a straight 15mph you'll finish in about 6 hours. Sounds like fun!

this reads like someone who has never done a fixed century. try it, and report back.

Fixed long-distance is fun in a masochistic way. The longest I've done fixed is a metric century, and the only standard century I've done was SS. They were equally exhausting.

I regularly do 40-60 mile days on my fixie and I don't see any issue with doing a century. It's all what you train for and how you prefer to ride. I have done 10-12 centuries on a mountainbike over the years and had a blast on every one. Of course I don't imagine that I will finish anywhere near the front, but thats not what I plan to do anyway. Generally those rides are just fun rides and they seldom fail to deliver.

The bolded sentence in the linked article is all you need to know. Ride the bike you're planning to do the century on, in the terrain you're planning to ride. Ride it a lot. Get at least a 60-miler or two in there. You'll be able to complete the century.

If it's a DIY century (which all the ones I've done are) then you also need to know about packing the right tools/supplies. But that's not a training thing.

Granted, I've only done centuries (and double metric centuries) on my geared bike, but a good friend that joins us for our Chicago-Milwaukee ride every year does it fixed and has no problems.

i used to do 70 twice a week in the spring to lose some winter weight when i was riding my conversion. It wasn't that hard after a couple of rides, although the terrain i was riding is super flat.

I always wanted to try to do shelby, MI to bay city. Never got the chance to though...
