Bottom up - outside to inside. Top down will eventually peel back due to your natural grip on the bars.....

depends on which way you wrap, toward you or away.

I tape away from the top down. So far, it has never unravelled. IME, when I rest my hands on the tops, I push away from me in the same direction that I tape, which simply tightens the tape even more. I start underneath the bar, make 1-1/2 turns, then start moving away with about one-third overlap. When I reach the hoods, I reverse direction on the bottom (drops) section. I taper cut the end of the tape about 1/2" past the bar ends, then fold it into the bar and hammer the bar plug in with a plastic mallet.

Start from the bar-ends and wrap the tape towards the stem so that when you grab the bars firmly and lean forward on them you 'tighten' the tape; lasts longer this way.

Track drops I go bottom to top, inside to out so when I'm in the drops it tightens the tape. Road drops I go bottom to top, start going inside to out but switch at the levers to outside to in so that when your in the drops it tightens the tape, and when your on the top it tightens the tape. Bullhorns I wrap tip to stem inside to out, no matter where you are on there your hands will tighten it. And that's with cork/synthetic tape, if its cotton or ribbon, I only use it on track drops and I wrap from stem down a tuck it in the end with the plug.

Another brilliant top down tape job. No ugly electical tape.

TT, do you ever use shellac on your tape?

Never.

trevor_ash 12-20-11 08:23 PM

I start at the bar ends. I have on occasion wrapped the wrong direction (CW vs. CCW) but I'm always too lazy to fix it. It's never been a real issue so the only problem it causes is people making fun of you.

I rewrapped my bar with cloth tape starting at the tops. Then, I went ahead and applied a million layers of red/brown and amber shellac

I think I will start wrapping from the tops more often

Bottom up electrical tape at top I had never considered another way

Question for those of you using Lizard Skins: With other self adhesive bar tapes I've used, the adhesive and part of the wrap usually tears off and leaves a lot of bar tape and residue on the bars. Does Lizard Skins do this or does it come off pretty clean?

Also, what does cloth tape with schellac feel like, hairnet? It looks like it would get sweaty and slippery. Definitely a good wrap job and a cool vintage look though!

If you don't stretch it, it won't tear or leave residue when removing it.

hairnet 01-04-12 06:28 PM

well, it's zero padding but that doesn't really bother me. I have been adding tons of shellac to get a glossy finish and it might be slippery but I rode last night with several layers while it still looked like cloth/matte and it was fine. I'm really just doing it for fun and looks because I have been curious about it.

I LOVE lizard skins. I don't think I will ever go with another wrap.

I thought it would be the only bar tape I would use, but the fizik dual tape won me over.

What's so special about Fizik Dual Tape ? I like Easton Velo tape at half the price.

Top to bottom looks weird to me. I like the electrical tape at the top.

The Planet Bike tape I use is awesome to put on and take off because the "adhesive" on the back is very friction-ey but not very tacky.
