My Columbia Jetstream makes an excellent windbreaker. I pair it with a merino hoodie for around-town duty. But for when it starts to really pour, I have a White Sierra Trabagon jacket stuffed in the bottom of my bag. It packs super small, so I don't worry too much about the weight.

Performance Century II jacket. $40
"Lightweight, windproof, water-resistant -- what else could you want in a cycling jacket?
Made with lightweight, breathable polyester, which doesn't require a coating like nylon, so additional washing won't lessen wind and water resistance
Microfleece collar and zipper windflap for added warmth protection from the wind
Highly visible reflective trim across the large zippered rear pocket provides extra visibility
Perfect on the bike performance with a close aerodynamic fit, longer raglan sleeves and extended tail"

It is a knockoff of the Pearl Izumi Zephyr, and works just as well.
I have both.
I bought the Perf jacket in a size larger so it fits over a fleece in the winter.

yeah. i can't really say much other than if you divide the time i spend in the rain by the comfort and enjoyment i get out of that jacket it's well, well worth it. i don't think i knew what 'high quality' meant before this.
maybe it's not worth the money to you, and that's fine, but i'm not rich by any means... but uh, i guess i'm in the rain a lot?
most breathable 100 dollar jackets are NOT waterproof. my friend builds hiking trails and he said goretex will soak through after you've been out in the rain. even when i've been out in the rain in 3ply laminate jackets like my conduit dt, the way the jacket was cut had it dripping down my pants on a bike. this jacket hasn't once let me down in any way. i wear it all the time, even as just a outer layer when it's cold.

And, according to the video... it gets you an attractive girlfriend, so that's always a plus.

Painfully average.

They don't market for cost. If they did, they would just make everything in China.
They are hitting the premium market, not choosing to compete with mass marketing. Common strategy for smaller companies that can offer more to those that want it.

and you know, prestigious brands charge big prices too
You said the quality is much better than the competition. Do you mean much better than other $400 windbreakers? And if so, I'd be curious as to the details on that too, because to me that's what the competition is, clearly they aren't competing with the $60 jacket from REI, like you said the premium market.
I understand it's a great jacket, I wish I had one, but somewhere in the last 5 years we started thinking that just because it wasn't made in Asia means it's made of some superb ultra rare quality ("workmanship"). We do it with frames, shirts, shoes, etc.

No, but they are able to focus more on quality and do things that are more expensive and not practical on a mass scale.
Clothing tailoring and stitching is an art all unto itself. Small details and overall design are all noticably different.
The difference between a $200 suit and $5000 suit is mostly in the cut. Think about that.
Because it is made in the USA or North America doesn't mean it is of superb quality.
It means it CAN be of superb and superior quality.
What it means is they are able to control quality to a higher degree and employ US employees.
I want to support USA businesses and believe it helps our economy.
I don't support based on that alone.
The fact MW makes superior product makes them worth supporting.
That's just me, others don't care and it's a free market so that's ok.
These are not cheap products so it's not for everyone.
However, what ever happened to the idea that you buy once and buy something made to last?
Maybe in the long run, it's cheaper because you are not buying a disposable product.
Just some thoughts on it. I don't want to shove this down your throat, just some reasons.

oh I understand that too, that's why I was genuinely curious about MWS and making sure it wasn't just lumped in with other 'made in north america so it must be good' stuff. I agree with everything else you said.
