Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? That's an MTB version of the single sided frame that everyone seems to swoon over. I don't know.

I like things that are different but for me it has to have a point other than proving that it can be done, doing design for the sake of design.

Asking this in all sincerity - not trying to challenge - what's the point? Light weight? Does it handle better? Aesthetics aside, was there a practical goal to designing these bikes?

I don't like it at all. Single sided stuff aint my thing. I don't even like Ducati single sided swing arms and most motorcyclists drool over them.

There is an advantage though. Belt drive bikes need a way to remove the belt, and that is usually done by taking the frame apart, since the belt can't be broken. This design facilitates simple maintenance and/or modifications.

Bikes are built mostly to grab attention and get people talking about the brand.

If my boy wasn't going to move on from his Giant balance bike by mid next summer, I'd probably start putting rad parts (nice headset, aluminum post, etc.) on it just because I can. He's 3 and has the balance part of the equation nailed.

i get what you mean, i use drops at the moment on my road bike and to be fair after a while your hands can go numb or tingly if you dont move them around. though you think it looks uncomfortable its actually a really really stable position to lay down some serious speed.

Yeah, but you're in the drops constantly...which is fine, but it seems there would be far more hand moving options on normal road drops.
