Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

+1

We are talking serious money here. Plus people jobs are on the line. Win and you keep your job. Lose and you go coach a collegiate cycling team.

They have a budget of SEVERAL millions of dollars thanks to the Lottery. Why not use it in every way possible. They even have a Sports Psychologist on staff. By all accounts, he's very effective.

Winning is Winning.

The British Cycling program is built on the idea of incremental marginal gains. +1% here. +0.5% there. +3% on that... all of that adds up to something. Apparently that "something" is a box full of gold medals and cash.

I didn't take anything personally.

No idea about the components. The bars will probably be $500-1000, I'd guess.

Everything depends on "production availability" or something like that. Meaning, "If you want us to turn out 1 set of bars for you, we'll do it...and you'll pay dearly."

Wind tunnel tests probably noted lots of turbulence coming off of the stem. So, they probably tried to calm the wind there with the smoothed stem. That has been in place on their track bikes since Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Sorry, that was supposed to make you think about all the time and engineering that went into that bike that looks like it was built by a "martian"

thats all. while there is a lot of love for lugs and fillet braising, I feel like one should know that is the grand father to carbon, kevlar composites and wind tunnels. Whether you appreciate it or not, I was simply helping you be informed about that bike.

It's not great. Leads to a disconnect in the responsiveness during certain parts of the pedal stroke and you need to be mindful when setting tension. I wouldn't recommend it, I did not find it fun or worthwhile at all.

You can generally mimic it with one of the $12 eBay chain-rings since they're often very out of round.

Fausto Coppi's track bike.

Because they are faster apparently.

Simple they're lighter and more aero than something larger.
