Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Fixie and a trailer.. bad mojo :)

Say you take a perfectly sweet steel track fixie and slap some BOB Nutz on the rear. Say, in a fit of mental aberration, you hitch up a trailer to it, 'cos it Just Fits (what, on a 120mm hub? apparently so!). And say, just hypothetically, you tool around hilly countryside picking up boxes of turnips. You'd learn these things:

Trailer + Fixie does work, but it's gloriously daft! That trailer is a damn ANCHOR when you hit a steep spot! Track bikes have whippy-ass chainstays of death!

Dunno, dude I bought my last bike from (SS MTB) was singing the praises of fixed + trailer. Perhaps in your particular circumstances it turned out to be a bad combo.

I actually have a fixie that I set up specifically to use with my BOB Trailer (YAK). Its my converted Huffy Superstar, (allow time for laughter), I run a brake on it, but for a while I didnt have one. I use it for when I make LARGE liquor store runs. Its good to have, but I woulnt dare use it if I lived in a hilly area. This summer I will probably run a back brake on that bike as, just as an extra precaution... actually, New Years is coming up, maybe I should run another brake before that liquor store run!

This has jack all to do with trailers but everything to do with liquor stores, particularly as I'm quite intoxicated at the moment from the proceeds.

Yesterday I put to the test my ghetto-fabulous rear rack + milk crate. Loaded that bad boy up with a twelve pack plus 3.5L of booze. Rolling down the street with twelve bottles jingling, a chain jangling (gotta run it dry, dontcha know), fendres a rattlin', and a partridge in a pear tree. In an embarassing sort of way, I felt like the jolliest f'ing elf ever.

Meanwhile I need to take the damn dog for a walk and work some of this out of my system.

Bostontrevor. You describe yourself as looking like many people around here who spend the night dumpsterdiving and turn up at the liquor store at 9:15 lining up for the 9:30 opening to reclaim the deposits and buy the days supply.

Nothing wrong with dumpster diving! The speed control with the trailer on was nice, really good traction, but a track bike just ain't the right bike to be hauling loads with. It's so wrong I was giggling the whole way (when I wasn't gasping for breath, natch).
