Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Not just that, sunny san diego!

Nonetheless brisk mornings/ temperatures are just encouragement to push harder; must stay warm!

Admittedly, I spend more time in the woods and with gears in the winter.

Cold temps don't bother me too much, even down into the single digits. I usually draw the line at freezing rain though.

20, coming from the Midwest. Any lower than that and breathing hurts, and that's no fun. Though maybe that isn't true here in the PNW with the more moist air - not sure, it's not ever been that cold so far.

Yea, I agree that the winter wind is the worst. Here on Lake Champlain the wind is BRUTAL. It's all in one direction generally, but it is bad enough to make me not want to ride. This winter has been cake though, rarely a missed day. I can ride in just about any temperature, since I deliver papers in my hometown when I go back for brakes. After nine winters of that crap you get used to the temperature.

i'll head out in a sweatshirt and shorts when it's 48, if i know it's going to warm up.

now that i'm commuting more, i plan on getting some real cold weather base layers and pushing my boundaries.

never too cold. if i happily snowboard in -10*f, ill bike in just the same. all 4 years at college i biked to class everyday, regardless of snowfall or temperature. one year we barely got above 10*f for a whole month but i biked everyday.

I do not mind biking in the cold, like below 20F, the cold does not bother me at all, but the wind gets annoying just cuz like Scrod said, its like you are fighting your bike the whole time and it sucks. And I also kinda like biking in the rain. Even if it is cold. I am weird like that. Biking in the snow is pretty fun as well I think. I just never go too far when there is a lot of snow or if it is coming down pretty hard.

20-ish (mainly because Houston doesn't get much colder than that)

I'll ride with my clipless pedals on the road bike in the 30's, but that is the limit for that bike. Now the FG or my commuter, I'll ride colder because I can wear shoes and gear that keeps me warmer. I just have never really found the gear "sweet sport" for the road bike. At least with the commuter and FG, I can simply wear normal clothes, so it isn't a problem.

I would say about 45 degrees. Even if it's not windy the ride creates a wind chill when it goes under that.

Coldest I've done was -17 degrees F. It's very rare that it gets that cold here though, so I've never been able to try anything colder. Just need to dress right and keep moving.

I really dont have a choice. I ride to work no matter what the weather. We are a one car family and with a wife and baby at home there is no way I am leaving them without a car. That being said, no temp is too cold because I have the gear to be able to layer and bundle up for any temp. Its all about layering and having the proper protection for toes, hands, and head.

Riding in freezing gusting wind still sucks though...

I have Reynaud's in my hands and feet and cold triggers it, so I try not to ride when its below about 20F. I did a few rides colder than that in January, but they weren't particularly fun.

-20F is the coldest I have ridden, it occasionally gets colder, but I normally just hole up inside when it gets that cold.

40 degrees is just long-sleeve t-shirt and windbreaker weather. i'll add another layer under 40.

25 degrees is my basic cutoff-- at that point, ice is a definite and it's not always easy to see. unintentional skidding sucks.

40 and raining-- i'll take the train.

...cold? Here in the vast wasteland of the Sonoran Desert I have the opposite problem, heat. It has to be over 105F for me to stop riding normally. Over 100F though and I stop doing longer rides typically.
