Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I'd trust one of those and a proper rack over a clamp-on rack, damn near killed myself when mine slipped a couple inches and went int the tire/wheel.

Bags are nice, but if you live in a hot climate, a rack is a great solution. This is a nice way to be able to use one without a lot of hassle.

I have an older backpack/pannier and loved it when I was in college. Carrying 20 lbs of stuff on my back 25+ miles a day got old fast. Somehow, I lost the backing plate. Have a full touring kit now, though only use it occasionally.

I use a timbuk2 messanger-bag/pannier. It goes on the rack for longer trips, or as a messanger bag for short trips and walking.
