Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bikes: 1990 Merckx(C-Record) / 2005 Bianchi Pista. Had 3 Cannondales, 1987 Trek 660 with Shimano 600(sold), 1988 Basso with Shimano 600(- sold)1995 KHS track bike(old style Campy stuff - sold), 2001 Fuji track bike(modified - sold)

Last winter I had this nasty ice patch in front of my house. I flipped the back wheel and put it on fixed. I went over the ice patch clipped in and went down. I then flipped the rear wheel over to freewheel and re-negotiated the same patch while coasting. No fall. I tried using the same speed for both attempts. I was convinced. Sheldon conceded the arguement in his own way. Maybe it just that I have a bad pedal stroke due to a bad left knee.
