Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? This a good deal?

Hey guys, there isn't too much info on this bike since it's custom, but do you think it's a good deal? I loooovvee how it looks, and I'd like to have a bike to complement my cyclocross

https://philadelphia.craigslist.org/bik/3010315924.html

Thanks!

You're new here, but I think you're fitting in nicely.

I reaaallly don't wanna spend that much---I have a Cannondale XR800 I use most of the time---I'd just like a single speed for a change of pace and to use in the summer (I keep the cannondale at college sometimes)

Don't expect to find anything of reasonable quality at the price point you're looking at.

I don't expect anything amazing, just something decent to commute around with....I thought maybe I could find something used for an ok price?

If you find a frame/cranks everything else, I have a wheelset that sits in my garage I'd let you have for peanuts

This is a good deal, can't make it fixed, but you can flip it for close to $400 if you can figure out the shifters. (try soaking the crap out of them with WD40 to break up the gunked up grease in them).

https://philadelphia.craigslist.org/bik/3020055435.html

if you buy this, I'll give you $50 plus shipping for the pedals and seat. That's a start right there.

Hey dude, I really appreciate the advice and offer. I'm just worried that the shifters will be difficult to fix and it'll be more hassle and time than it's worth.

Your call, but there's a lot on that bike that's valuable. Those 7 speed brifters are rare as hen's teeth, I'd bet, even broken, you could get $50 out of them in the C&V for sale. The frame has got to be a lust object for someone out there, that'll probably pull at least $100 if you could be patient.

I know it's a decent amount of work, but that's a steal for that bike.

The Flite in those photos looks to be in pretty nice condition, and it's one of the original ones and not the reissue. I paid $50 for mine and the one there looks to be in better condition. You could probably get ~$60 for the saddle alone.

Ugh you guys are making it hard for me. The thing is, I'm leaving June 13 for a two month long internship that involves me biking 25-40 miles somedays pulling all my gear + sometimes a 50lb trailer. I don't think I'd have time to flip it in time, plus I live about an hour away from the Craigslist person.

Really just looking for a bike to tide me over till my internship...a nice one that I could actually use would be nice hah. Seems like my best luck would be prowling CL constantly? Any entry-level bikes that are worth it? I got a sweet deal for my Cannondale xr800 ($200 and in good condition), so I don't really wanna spend too much for a secondary bike

If that's the case, go get one of those $100 walmart fixies and then sell it for $50 when you're done with it.

Here's one- at least you know it can't be THAT beat on.

I still wanna use the bike for years...I looked up reviews for the Thruster and I think I'll pass.

How about this? I'd be willing to make the price IF it's a good deal. Thanks so much for everyone's help, there is so much to learn about bikes
