Sram omnium help
Ok so before I even think of calling the mechanics nearby I would rather start here.
As I was installing my non-drive side crank arm, I noticed that it made the drive side come closer and closer to the frame to the point where it banged up against the chainstay. Now, keep in mind, this is my first time ever installing a crank, luckily it was pretty simple, yet I am ...well.. dumb for these things. Now, my question is whether this is normal or not, and if it's because the non-drive side has to be only threaded in a certain amount. P.s. I bought the crankset from ebay so it doesn't come with a manual. |
Unfortunately, this is an all-too-common problem with Omniums not being compatible with a lot of frames.
Someone will most likely be along soon telling you to use BB spacers on the drive side but that's not the way to fix it - spacing the cups further apart won't magically make the spindle any longer and the left crank arm won't bottom out like it's supposed to when installed to the correct torque. It may "work", but it will be janky. |
What frame were you installing it on?
|
An old Porter track frame. Basically made in 1991 in small production to be run in New Mexico when they were trying to legalize betting on track racing.
|
How can you tell before you buy what frames these will fit.
|
I just called my bike shop, they told me all I have to do is get a longer spindle. That wouldn't be janky would it?
|
Well, it wouldn't be janky because it's not possible with that crankset.
They thought you were talking about a standard 3-pc crankset, not an integrated crankset like the Omniums(or any other GXP-based crankset). |
It is still weird that crankarm is what is hitting and not the spider. Maybe you need a spacer? Is the bottom bracket shell 68mm?
|
The arm hitting the chainstay is not as common as the spider making contact but it does happen on some frames.

Yeah so I spent the time to walk over there and it turns out it doesn't fit so a return is now in effect :(
My other choice of crank is the miche primato advanced.. Good alternative for the price? |
Great crankset, just don't use a Miche BB.
|
Consider SRAM S300 cranks
|
Is there a way you can test to see if Omniums will fit? Or is it trial and error?
I'd rather not go through with the error. |
what length are your crank arms?

If you're skeptical about if they work with the Kilo, I can tell you that they do fit.

They work on Kageros too - but ddeadserious had an issue with his.
|
Yep. Had to file the backs of the spider on all of the arms. 2 or 3 of them really needed it, the other two were just a little too close for comfort. I did manage to bump off some paint where the crank arm flexed into the chainstay. It's not horrible, but it's really not that close either. http://freeemoticonsandsmileys.com/e...ont%20know.gif

I'd rather not go through with the error. SE Premium Brew Leader 722 EAI BK (only a few MM between the back of the spider and the chainstay) |
75s/SSPs/DA/Campy cranksets ftw
