You're gonna have to build if you want something top of the line. The only brands that bikes off the shelf have, are usually accredited to the frame, and everything on them is generic junk.
I don't think I'll have to build. The "generic" components that you refer to as junk, I think, are both quite functional and durable by western standards. They therefore, should qualify as quality components, unless proven to be otherwise. Just because, they don't have much advertisement fluff should not disqualify them as being viable contenders within the component marketplace. |

Thats fine, but none of those are 500 dollar plus frames. One's a 525 Reynolds, one's a 520 Reynolds, and the last is a 4130 cro mo.
Low end frames, plus low end junk components shouldn't equal thousand dollar price tags. These "low end frames" that you're referring to , are respected chromoly steel materials and one of the strongest bicycle frame materials available. Generally, when chromoly 853 or 631 steels are used in the making of bicycles, their tubing is "butted", or thinned out towards the middle, causing them to become light in mass, but less impact resistant. Therefore, they become less durable. A feature that's both desired and respected in quality bicycles. Therefore, standard 4130 or 520 chromoly steel should be just fine OTS, for any single speed aficianado looking for a truly "royal" bicycle steed. |

When using the term "avant-garde", I guess I was attempting to create the mental image of a proven bicycle that has risen to the top of SSFG cycling, in terms of comfort, speed, agility, style, and durability.

This thread is avant garde.

That's not what avant garde means. Avant garde means new, experimental, and innovative. You can't just make up the definition to fit what you want it to be, especially when you mean the exact opposite ("proven" vs. "experimental")! Perhaps that's where much of the confusion in this thread is occurring.

We don't just do the commonplaced thing by buying on impulse at a big box store. We develop a criteria for the bike in which we're looking, and we relentlessly pursue it. We are Avant garde, and so are our bicycles! 75% of all bicycles purchased last year, were purchased at big box store bicycle outlets. We're not cut from that cloth! We are the vanguard, in pursuit of the consummation of our dreams in the form of decent bicycles that suit are needs. Only this time, it's in the form of single speeds. |
im a newb and rollin' with this philosophy:
the rider makes the bike, the bike doesn't make the rider i ride a POS craigslist bike and for me personally has worked better than anti-depressants, therapists, and drugs. |

All I had in my kitchen last night was a box of Mac n Cheese. I didn't want some stupid big box store meal so I used the noodles to make noodle pudding!
I made a unique choice in dining. I am Avant Garde, and so was my dessert! |

My overall point is, if you going to spend a thousand dollars on a bike, you better get a thousand dollars worth of bike.
