advice on a new wheelset?
 

so I'm looking for a new wheelset, w/flipflop hub preferably. I currently am running a very dated and used Weimann wheelset on my SS I ride on campus, Im also relatively new to the SSFG world and running on a budget. any suggestions for brands/models to take a look at? I appreciate it

what kind of riding do you do(do you just ride on campus, if yes, then why replace what you have), what are your main concerns (weight, toughness, appearance)?

I ride campus and do occasional country rides during the year, but i plan on much more city riding in the near future, the Weimanns I am running are from circa 1990 and getting into bad shape. I am looking for something sturdy, I am a heavier guy, and weight isnt a real concern for me as long as they arent anchors or anything

Velomine, Weinmann DP18's to Formula's ........... although slightly heavier than Deep V's they run $50-60 cheaper.

I've got to agree. Unless you have a friend or active Craigslist in your town.

I like finding Formula hubs laced to a quality rim for $50 on the used market. Just keep the front.

OP - it's very hard to beat Velomine's pricing. Have a look around their site and see what you like.

What about the velocity rims to the Paul wood hubs they also have listed. Are they worth double the price?

Only if you do any sailing, and are lacking a boat anchor.

I really know nothing about the Paul woods products but just trying to see why everyone goes gaga over them.

They are very, very heavy.

Phil Woods are heavy, shiny and expensive. They'd be something you could pass on to kids. They'll last forever.

The redline hubs are still quality and dependable?

Yeah, the Redline hubs are just rebranded Formulas.

Phil is super high quality made in the USA stuff. Very serviceable. If you have questions they answer the phone. Or call you back.

Formula hubs are completely satisfactory quality. Bearings are serviceable. You'll put a few thousand miles on them before you think about them again.

Phil is great if you have a pile of cash and nothing to spend it on. It's also a great brand to find at a garage sale or eBay misspelling.

Anyone know if a Miche Pista wheelset is worth the bit of extra $$?

That's ironic. I've been waiting for an e-mail or call back from them since the beginning of this week and when I called them yesterday to follow up, The lady who answered the phone made me feel like I was being bothersome.

My comment was directed at the OP. You, on the other hand, probably asked for it.

Your point is taken. My back and forth was about sending in a BB to have the bearings replaced. Which was 100% on my dime. They are probably quicker to turn and burn those kinds of pure profit calls.

How do Deep Vs compare to Open Pros? I thought a lot of people recommended the latter, or can Open Pros not take a beating as well as Deep Vs can? Actually, I think I've read about Open Pros cracking as well.

open pro's are great rims. i don't like velocities because they are made from much softer aluminum.

mavic > velocity in every way.

but, i think velocity must have paid off everyone on this message board and you will soon hear how awesome velocities are.

i would go to the LBS and have them build you a rear wheel (i also bet your front one is still fine). it will probably cost as much if not more than a set from velomine but you will be building a relationship with a local business and if you are into riding a bike having friends at the LBS is worth more than a cheap internet wheelset.

i go cheap everything else but my wheels are all handbuilt by local shops. i haven't trued a wheel in a long time.
