that's pretty good for NJ, when I lived there everybody drove their fat asses around and never even considered riding a bike past age 16...

anyways, I'm sure we're not too far away from seeing some character on TV toting a FG around like an accessory. Ain't gonna stop me...or maybe I'll take my cog off and go zero gear!

Specialized makes the langster. The sheer fact that people actually run out and buy those things rather than build up fixie from ebay/found parts tells you what? That's right children - MAINSTREAM.

Uh huh....yep....already happened. Cry into your Guinness and lament the demise of all things great.

myxbyx 01-24-05 04:48 PM

Thylacine Cycles- Your idol rides one.

what? Mr Karsten's is done?

Ah well.

I have had mine for two years now. Got you beat. 80s 531 cromo, mavic ma2s, shimano 600 everything else.

You know how many fixed gears I see in SF? Answer: More Fixie's than Road bikes. Now What is mainstream?

skitbraviking 01-24-05 07:43 PM

If fixed went mainstream then all the hipsters would have to sell their bikes.

icithecat 01-24-05 08:26 PM

Perfect. The market flooded with 'only used once' bikes.

Brings it on! I wouldn't mind picking up a nice hardly-used FG for cheap.

junioroverlord 01-24-05 09:35 PM

I say we all switch from chains to shaft drives. Shaft fixies!

bold talk from a man quoting the shins... :D

ostro 01-24-05 10:07 PM

according to health and fitness mag anyone who rides a fixed gear, more specifically the Langster or Bianchi is a "messanger-wannabe"

ryan_c 01-24-05 10:11 PM

Even worse, they recommend the Langster.

smurfy 01-24-05 10:28 PM

Shaft-drive is not gonna happen, either. Too much drivetrain resistance, soaking up power to the rear wheel. Us human engines need all the help we can get!

Been there, done that!

There is actually a better transfer of power with a shaft drive

It's not the shaft that kills efficiency, it's the right-angle units at either end.

Get with the times kids! When the anglophiles mainstreamed the "American Roadster" in the 1990s, all the cool kids dropped their Sturmeys for Bendix kick-back shifting 2-speeds.

(of course Sturmey still does have this going for them.)

Where have you been? Shaft drives been around forever. It's never been a good thing, but crackpots keep re"inventing" it every few years. Here's the latest version I've seen

Talking about mainstream, some 10yr old kid yelled out "is that a fixie?" when I was stopped by a crossing guard next to an elementary school.

LupinIII 09-22-09 05:28 PM

lol i was reading this thread going "wtf, fixed gears are totally mainstream".

many people still ride, seems it hasn't affected many riders.

Cy Trivialities 09-22-09 05:35 PM

yea, the **** has hit the fan.

What new distinctives would have to be adopted to maintain the subculture.

Maybe the question should have been "has FG gone mainstream." Sounds like it has in places. Not in Baltimore, though, IMO. Hardly anyone I've ever talked to about FG has any idea what it is.

Ask skateboarders. I think my buddy Charles busted out his track bike to mess on in 88-89 when he wrecked his other bike. I think it's awesome seeing how it's exploding all over, kids' into it. Now if we can get some more covered velodromes.......

There's an olympic class track around here, too bad it's 20 miles away from where I live.

Thats what I was thinking too until I saw the dates. Truthfully for me I didn't get more into it until my cousin started it. I guess I am a mainstream follower.
