He gave me a confused look, so I gestured at his bike. "I have a patch kit and a pump, need anything?" He looked at me and turned back to a friend he was with and kept walking. I then realized he was just carrying it, it didn't look like he'd ridden it (yellow tires weren't dirty).

Now its ON and I'm going to heckle them every chance I get  :D

I had someone ask me if something was wrong once, when I was walking my bike up the hill to my house. He was really friendly, and I appreciated the gesture. I told him I had just ridden all over town, played football for PT for two hours, then could not make it up the hill. He laughed, then said he would not want to climb the hill with one gear either. D:

Then, I decided I would train to make it up the hill all the time, which I do now. Before that, I had only made it up the hill twice. It does not look that bad, but it becomes hard as soon as you start climbing it.:)

So I subscribed to this thread in 2005, two years after getting my first fixed gear.

It's 2009 and I own two fixed gears now. Still riding the same bike, but with a basket, upright bars and a brake. I really couldn't care that more people ride them now. It means more people on bikes and that makes me happy.

I wonder if he knows they're intended to be ridden? I mean, the guy in the commercial didn't, and he looked so coool...

BTW guys does anyone have a lead on what the next super kewl underground cycling trend is gonna be? I wanna get in on the ground level, when its fresh and RAW.

dsh 09-24-09 07:21 AM

I'm thinkin' maybe left side drive, or bikes with like FIVE brakes on them instead of none.

Oh man thats totally it...

I'm gonna build a bike with seat stay calipers, chainstay calipers, front fork, and discs on both. It'll be fixie of course.

nobody steal my idea

Perhaps...
Penny-farthing/high wheeler bikes, b/c they are more retro and vintage than fixed-gear.

Tall bikes, b/c you have to make them yourself. I can't imagine any large, mainstream bike companies ever getting in on the action, b/c they would completely be a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Unicycles, b/c they take a lot more skill to ride than two-wheeled FG bikes.

dsh 09-24-09 07:38 AM

Oh man tall bikes, that is totally it. I need to learn how to weld...

I Like Peeing 09-24-09 07:46 AM

Front racks.

dsh 09-24-09 08:31 AM

Oh man front racks, that's totally it.

What about... front trailers? Think of all the PBR.

Any thoughts on how much a 48" HED disc wheel would cost? How much it would weigh? How much women it would attract?

Also, I think Strida folding bikes advertised here will be the next huge thing. "Why get a frame with two triangles when you only need one, brah?"

It's so minimalistic and zen, man.

Wouldn't it be cool if after all of the manufactures have shoved carbon fiber and plastic at us for a decade that the next raw trendy bikes would be steel and alloy, just saying, now that carbon crap is mainstream shouldn't any self respecting or self loathing hipster want recyclable steel?

dsh 09-24-09 09:37 AM

Well then I am already way ahead of the curve because I own nothing but steel.

They already have them. Dutch housewives use them to haul children. Called Bakfiets.

Threads like this make me want to puke.

And something to think about, OP: You posted this question in 2009.

Uh, the original post was in January of 2005.

The fixie riders (harsh generalization coming) are some of the stupidest non-conformist conformists i.e take your brakes off or you're not cool (i know you all know these kind of people). I had a dude laugh at my brakes and freewheel, only to fall on his phacking ass 5 minutes later while we were riding. Now days when someone says stuff like that I say "wanna race?" the answer is always no.

I think fixie is a damn cool trend and SS, I hate gears and I don't think the advantages out weight the disadvantages. If it gets people riding then ride on. Not even that far back bicycles were uncool, I remember in highschool walking to school cause no one biked, it's like **** that lets ride.

next mission, getting the gf on a bike.

TRaffic Jammer 09-24-09 02:58 PM

2005? Seems about when "fixies" started right? :roflmao2::roflmao2:

dsh 09-24-09 03:10 PM

I heard a rumor that one guy was riding them in late 2004 but that has never been confirmed and may just be an urban legend.

Over at TrendHunter.com, they had this:

Rim-drive cranksets: Why? Why the **** not!

TRaffic Jammer 09-24-09 04:48 PM

Because I'm a design student with access to CAD systems. Material physics be damned!!

Many road racers (and others), also ride fixed...they just don't get all hipster about it.

BTW: FG bikes have been around far longer than many of us on this forum.

P.S. I look cool on all of my bikes.

I want to break that 'designer's fingers before they get any ideas that they're any good.
