If you want to buy through an LBS because you want to test ride them, go test ride them and follow your heart.

Bikes: Leader 722TS, Surly Steamroller, Panasonic DX-3000, Trek 4900

I've ridden the Jamis and the Torker. Between those two I prefered the Jamis. I'm kind of partial to Fuji bikes, though I've never actually owned one. Just liked the ones I've seen.

I'd say the Monocog 29er. I've never been to Boston, but I imagine you run into some nasty winters up there.
