Something about riding a solid feeling daily.
|
Dude, you know.
|
Ellipse are fine for street use.
They aren't the lightest. |

Build it with xr-300's, lasers, and novatecs, and they'd probably come out lighter than ellipses too.

Don't waste scrod's time emailing him about something you can easily find out for yourself. All black everything comes out to be $304.20 shipped in the US. Add about ~$45 for each wheel for build cost. You can cut costs using silver spokes and nipples. Spoke lengths: 279mm for 3x front and back. |

I had interpreted his question as meaning that he didn't know how many spokes he needed and since we don't know what lacing pattern he wants we can't tell him how long etc. I also figured scrod could help him out with the nipples and tape and stuff. I agree that it would be stupid to ask for something through e-mail that could just be calculated on the website.
Just kinda annoyed of blatant uselessness. |

This riddle, however, is quite easily solved by consulting the number of holes in the hub and/or rim.

I'm just a total newb when it to wheels and parts, but I'm learning.

Take some of that article with a grain of salt though. I don't really agree with everything Sheldon says about spoke count and such. |

I would probably only ride with the front Mavic on the streets. A 20 spoke rear as a daily is asking for trouble imo.
Everyone is quick to assume these wheels are not street-suitable. A light rider ~ <170 lbs who doesn't ride like a jackass and who knows how to unweight themselves when hitting large bumps would probably have little trouble with those wheels. I worked with a guy who rode a set of Ellipses for a year or two and didn't complain about them coming out of true too easily. I rode a fully loaded touring bike with a 24/20 spoke set of Bontrager Race paired spoke wheels because they were all I had at the time. I only broke one alloy nipple over 1,000 miles. I even sunk my front wheel into a storm drain at one point and only gave myself a slight hop in the wheel. Just my $.02. |
That was my opinion and I'll stick to it. I'm basing MY opinion on myself, 6'1 240lbs. I do ride with a 20 spoke front, but again, I would not ride a low spoke count rear.
I don't doubt a lighter rider would be ok with a set though. |
