Mavic ellipse?
So I currently have an aerospoke on the front and a generic deep v on the back. I want to have two really solid, lightweight wheels that aren't too flashy to the untrained eye. People see my arrow spoke and say "what's up with your tire?". I respond with "I think the rims cooler".
Anyway, what do you guys think of the mavic ellipse wheel set? And what's the deal with the hubs? Are they metal? Are they plastic? |
I wouildn't use ellipses on the street (cue carleton to tell us that he did).
Too low of a spoke count. |
|
I had Ellipses for a very short while and didn't like them at all. They felt flimsy, like a cheap toy.
|
Oh boy
|
I would probably only ride with the front Mavic on the streets. A 20 spoke rear as a daily is asking for trouble imo.
|
It sounds like a lot of you are telling me not to get the mavic ellipse. What would you recommend for a durable, light, nice looking (not flashy like an aerospoke) wheel? By durable I don't mean a tank. Just something that won't untrue every week. I'll be riding these around town and on 10-40 mile rides.

Veeps to formulas.
Although I do love my Formation Faces. |
Mavic open pro, CXP, velocity aero head, deep V, H+Son, etc
A ton of other better, not to mention cheaper, options than ellipses. Commuting on ellipses is JA. |

Oh, I should have mentioned- I want Deep V style rims, just nothing really deep like b43.

Build it with xr-300's, lasers, and novatecs, and they'd probably come out lighter than ellipses too.
|
friend bought ellipses for his cervelo T1, he seems to love them. really fast dude at the track goes back and forth from his ellipses and his recons. both were on chainlove sometime in the last 2 years, now the recons are impossible to find and the ellipses are just back to being semi overpriced

Imagine that, wheels that were designed and built for the track work well on the track.
|
Sell the 'spoke, use the money to buy Deep Vs or CXP22s to Formulas. Black You'll have enough money left over to get Mavic stickers to slap on the rims.
:p |
I've been commuting on a set for 3 years now. I take the brake off that same bike and ride it at the track too. No issues with the wheelset. If you're a brakeless, skidding idiot, you might want a set of wheels built for that kind of stupidity, though.
|
like i said, if you want a light weight wheelset, velomine offers a m13II wheelset with sealed bearing formula hubs, if you want something more durable without being super heavy the velocity deep v's to formulas. If you want a strong lightweight wheel and are willing to spend a bit more, they offer mavic open pros to sealed formula hubs. they are light strong and reliable
**** ive considered the cr18's just because they are a wider rim + 23c tire |
But OP wants that deep section aesthetic, brah. Suns and Open Pros won't cut it.
OP, just get a pair of Deep Vs to Formulas. They've got the strength you need, aren't hella heavy, will cost a lot less than Ellipses, AND you get aesthetic + STRT CRED pointzzz. |
