How do you explain what fixed gear is?

I can't tell you how many people ask me why my bike doesn't have any brakes. How many peple tell me I'm stupid for only having one gear.

So I tell them, it's a fixed gear bicycle. They give me a confused look. You know, one gear, no coasting. "No coasting?!" Why would you only want one gear?

So what I say is "Because its my gear."

Do you guys have any better sayings to get people to understand?

"It's that old-timey sh*t where they go in circles."

Adrian_ 10-10-12 11:41 AM

I just tell them premium rush inspired me and they should see it too.

when someone asks me that i look at them and say "derp?"

ddeadserious 10-10-12 12:01 PM

It's not difficult to explain what it is. The difficult part is explaining why I like to ride it.

striknein 10-10-12 12:02 PM

"Gotta make weight bro."

misskaz 10-10-12 12:04 PM

Maybe it's something about where you live or the people you interact with. I rarely get any comments like that. Even the ones that don't know what it is just say something like "Oh, that seems hard!" or whatever when I explain it. I don't know if I've ever been challenged like that when talking about riding fixed.

1. minimalistic
2. harder workout
3. design
4. Direct Drive feel

to list a few.

Mount at least 1 brake and you will cut out 3/4 of the "Why Bro!?"

zoltani 10-10-12 12:07 PM

can't stop, don't want to either

Sixty Fiver 10-10-12 12:09 PM

Explaining what it is easier than explaining why you do it.

hairnet 10-10-12 12:09 PM

ignore and keep riding. drop those that care enough to make a fuss

seau grateau 10-10-12 12:11 PM

"It's a mother****ing fixie."

ThermionicScott 10-10-12 01:20 PM

It's more fun.

carleton 10-10-12 01:29 PM

"What's the big deal? You can't coast when you walk...unless you use roller skates."

caloso 10-10-12 01:31 PM

“I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five.
Isn’t it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer?
We are getting soft…As for me, give me a fixed gear!” [TABLE]

This thread comes up every month or so and usually gets to 3-4 pages if you feel like searching...

1. As long as you have air in the tires you're good to go
2. You can make one for dirt cheap and never need to put much work into it
3. They are perfect for stop and go traffic or for moving through small spaces
4. They are more unique than most other bikes because people personalize them more
5. They are just fun
6. If you have to ask you'll never understand

the inability to stop combined with the lust of not stopping.

Depends on what the definition of "is" is.
