Riding 55 miles too much?
The longest I've ever ridden my bike was probably 10-15 miles. I usually just ride around campus or just stroll around town, never done anything serious. I just want to know if it's plausible to do 55 miles in like 5 hours. I'm meeting a girl who transferred to another school and I mean, I don't wanna bike there and then sleep the whole weekend...
Bikeforums, is this gonna be a nice stroll or will I want to kill myself?
Setup:
FTP 09
Omniums
Velocity Deep Vs
Profile Design Carbon Bullhorns
48/17

48/17 on deep V's isn't the setup I'd choose for 55 miles. But it's more than possible, throw in a couple of stretch and refueling breaks and you'll be okay.

Want to kill yourself? You will probably just drop dead from exhaustion.
Just ****ing do it, man. Have a stupid adventure of it.

Forgot to say, this is assuming your ride is going to be flat.
If you have any sort of extensive climbing involved, even a slight grade really, you're gonna be toast.
Can't you do half public transit/half bike?

The only way to know if you're up to riding 55 miles is trying to ride 55 miles. If you stretch well before and after the ride and keep yourself hydrated you should be fine. Go for it and have fun.

I did this same thing this summer, but on a 21 speed hybrid. Started biking in earnest early last spring, did 10-15 mile treks, one 22 mile and decided to do a longer ride with a friend. It was close to 6 hours with a lot of fairly steep hills (for me anyway), including a lunch break and small break. I made it OK but was dead tired by the time I got home again. It sounds like you're actually going to do 110 miles as you would be going there and back?
Try and get a contingency plan in case of breakdown or exhaustion. A friend that can pick you up? Consider weather on the return too, a lot can change in 2 days. Plan on carrying at least 2 water bottles and refill them en route as needed.
Wish you luck friend.

I did 30 miles in 2.5 hours. Doing 55 in 5 would mean you would just keep going nonstop with little to no breaks. I'd aim for 6 hours, and as long as the ride is relatively flat, go get 'em tiger.

55 miles in 5 hours is moving at 11 mph. That's a pretty casual riding pace, but it's the length that will get to you after a while. As mentioned you will need to take some breaks along the way - and be sure to keep stretching when stopped.

Well, if you'v never ridden more than 15 miles before, its going to be fairly exhausting, but you should have enough energy left for humping, if thats what you are getting at. Keep yourself hydrated and don't forget to eat. Do longer rides regularly and 55 miles will quickly begin to feel like a minor workout and shouldn't take you much more than 3 hours.

Can you post a picture of the girl? That will help figure if 55 miles is too much.
Some girls, well 5 miles is too much.

Several years ago there was a thread by a poster on this forum about riding quite a ways (IIRC 80+ miles) to see a girl and give her a gift. It was both very funny and very sad, he crashed on the way there, got rained on and totally weirded out the girl.
If you can find it, it's well worth the read. Hits all the high notes, unrequited love, perseverance in the face of adversity and the stumbling blocks that affect any adventurer who plans poorly.
It's also totally funny.

55 miles in 5 hours is just 11mph. Unless this is some outrageous terrain, I don't see a problem.

I say go for it, I did 41mi nonstop on my old 46/16 setup in 2hrs and 28min with an avs if 16.4mph but this was on a ss. I usually just commute to work which is 8mi one way but I wanted to test myself so I decided to go for it and did pretty well IMO lol. If you don't already have a cycling short then I highly recommend it!

Just do it. Bring water and snacks. I did my first century in 6 hours including breaks (to refill water and take a poo at the Griffith observatory). I was fine, just beat and sleepy as hell, but my longest ride before that was only a measly 44 miles and I bonked because I did it in the morning and forgot to eat breakfast. Bad idea

Honestly? 55 miles is easy. If you eat well before the ride, take along plenty of water and a small amount of food you can finish it. I've been riding 250km about 130-140miles? every weekend for over a month now and as long as you keep yourself fueled and hydrrated there really is nothing more to it than wanting to finish the ride.

55mi? Really?
Our Saturday morning group rides are that or more.
I'd really hope that anyone here would be able to keep at least an 11mph pace.
Not hatin'....but c'mon dude.
I've done more ridiculous things than ride 55mi for poon.
