brooklyn biking
if you're the guy riding a brakeless fixie in prospect park today with your friend on a geared bike, nice ride.
if you're the kid who hit me in the ass with a snowball on bergen st, nice shot. if you're the girl who yelled "pay attention" at me while crossing against the light and talking on a cell phone, nice sense of irony. if you're the lady in a minivan who cut me off and forced me into a snowbank, nice driving. if you're the girl on a bike who waved at me on flatbush, nice attitude. if you're in brooklyn, it's a nice day for a ride. |
I used to like Grabsteins is that place still there?
|
i'm not sure, what is it?
|
Where are all the bicyclists in Queens?

I know 5 messers from queens and only one of them ride a fix. And its only me and him who rides to manhattan. The rest of the wimps on there multi gear bikes take the train. lol |
nice post. i love riding in Brooklyn. I live at 6th and Flatbush and I can't think of a better place in the world to reside.
Your "pay attention" comment is too funny, especially cuz that's what I say to peds when they do that. We should have a meetup in the slope sometime! When it gets warmer a fun thing to do is to pick up some Belgian brews at Bierkraft and then chill in the park. |
Actually, we should form a team for Monster Track 6 called the BQE connection. With a group of riders working together, it's a little easier to get through a race like this. Brooklyn Queens Express.
Whose Down!? |

Years ago we used to ride over the QBB all the time and it was the race to get to Jamacia (Hillside Ave) the fastest. It was like 17- 19 track bikes not road with fixed gears... Riding with the cars over the bridge was wild.. Rode in til it became a problem with the cops.I move back uptown it was heaven again. S/F, CEYA! |

im on the south end of Bklyn in sheepshead bay. i just started commuting to wall st and its definitly an interesting ride. singlespeed for now but when this weather clears up i'll flip flop my wheel and give fixed a try.
|
I rarely see SS/F riders in Brooklyn...
|
i see quite a few where i'm at, almost every day. a girl who works at gorilla coffee has a blue pinarello, someone who works at the surreal cafe has a green peugeot, saw an iro in front of pathmark yesterday...
|
nice neck face icon.

more bk sightings : there are always fixies outside of foodswings on grand incl. this one:

that's my favorite bike ever...
|
between that Gitane and his Benotto, Jon's got two mighty fine rides for a food delivery guy (according to that FGG desc. -- maybe he does something else?). I want to move to NYC or Chicago after graduation but worry about the costs. But I guess plenty of people do well enough without real world, 50K+ jobs.
I'm being a complete sissy, right? |
Adam -
Not to diss NY, particularly old BKLYN, but Chicago isn't really all that bad from a cost of living perspective. You could seriously work in a coffee shop and still live in a nice neighbourhood in a nice apartment. If you live with other people, it's even cheaper. The same can be said for NY but cost of living/rent is ridiculous for the amount of space comparatively. But it comes down to which you prefer. |
you can do okay here, but the less money you make the more important connections become. particulary with housing. moving here without knowing anybody can be rough, even more so without a decent amount of savings.

true. I was homeless for months before getting an "in" connection on an apt...! it's tough acquiring/maintaining connections for anything when you're not a "people" person, but it really makes living easier around here. |

Corona, near Queens Center Mall (maybe you saw my bike for sale ads on NYC Craigslist (I sold my Langster and Fuji last week and bought an '05 Pista). It's an 8 mile ride to Central Park. |
I don't see too many fixed gears in Queens actually.
ON the QBB I always see the messengers chilling after work and they all have mountain bikes. I'm sure there are fixed gear riders in Queens, but I've been missing them.

i'm in redhook where there's not much of anything, fixed gears included, but everytime i go over to williamsburg fixies seem to outnumber all other kinds of bikes. although i saw 2 great bikes parked in front of sonny's bar a few weeks back. and yes, the rent is totally out of control.
