Fixed gear FrameSet advice
 

I am currently riding a converted Schwinn sprint fixed gear and im looking to possibly upgrade my frame at some point.I have upgraded most of my components way above the frame as i have dura-ace crank , lock ring and phill woods cog with a brooks and a nitto pearl steam.I am basically looking for a frame that is size 54, at or under 300 (closer to 250 is better) has a 1" threaded headset , and i can mount a front brake on it or get a fork with a mount for it.I have done some searching around but havent found anything on the forums ( i would like a specialized steel langster but i cant find a frame in my budget)

Im a fan of the the quill stem and i would like to keep with that style of bike , im fine with finding another frame to convert but i would like to get a track frame.

If you were to hold out a little more you could get an njs frame or old pinarello etc on ebay, but Im not sure if there is really all that much of an "upgrade" within that price range that isn't 1 1/8. I think soma and some other similar brands make some 1 inch. I would go with a leader or other 1 1/8 frame over that anyday, but I am biased towards aluminium. Plus thomsons are cooler than nittos.

I used to think that way, which is why I specified a quill when I commissioned my Hillbrick.
Then I discovered I couldn't get the bars I wanted ... then I discovered oversized bars with the modern shapes and soon found a set of bars with a lovely, sexy curve and very comfortable places to put my hands.
I'm probably as big a retro grouch as the next man ( okay, worse than that :innocent:) but function comes before form and my classically inspired custom build wears an adaptor, modern neck and modern oversized bars.

I'm not putting down the traditional bends I still love them but, the modern setups offer some good alternatives. Mind you, as I found, if your frame has a threaded head, you can use either quills or the modern stuff ( via the adaptor).

I have a nice set up withy current quill system and I just want to upgrade my frame like I said, plus I have a road bike and cross bike that have modern threadless if I want a different ride or bars.

This is pretty much what a quill stem feels like after riding a threadless 1 1/8" setup.

im no big beefy dude but i havent noticed any give with the quill stem on my schwinn before it was taken. i had older nitto steel drops and a steel quill. between sprinting uphill downhill, flats.

well i really didnt notice it all, maybe if i had focused it in. but thats not why i ride.

I've got a quill on my Europa ( light green below) and a modern stem setup mounted on a 1" to 1 1/8 " adaptor. Yes, I can feel the difference but to be honest, it doesn't bother me. There is a simple elegance to a nice quill while the heavy stem and bars of the modern setup is more businesslike. Frankly, unless you've another reason for using one or the other, aesthetics are a good enough excuse ... just don't say that to a roadie ;)

Quills and threaded headsets are heavier than modern threadless systems.

Get an old Italian road bike with horizontal drop outs. Columbus anything tubing.

Anyone know where i might be able to the one of the older pake frames from back when they had the threaded stems ?

You could troll ebay the rest of your life or just make a rational decision to stop insisting on using obsolete steering systems.

You could offer constructive input or stop trying to change my mind, both would be appreciated .

You're in Savannah? There's a least one shop there that deals with older track/road frames that would either have something or would be motivated to find you something at your price point.

I know there is perry rubber , but there old inventory is top shelf merxx, colongo , and other great condition and high price items . I might look and see if i can get my hand on a fuji feather frame set for not a lot of money or i can get another good old road frame, i guess its just turning into kind of a waiting game.

Why don't you buy a Kilo TT frameset?

I saw those and I like the frame but I ride a 54cm and they don't have my size.
