Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Is this bike worth the money?

Is this bike any good?

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with these SS bikes from bikesdirect? I am considering buying something like this for when going out on slow paced family rides and such: https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/dawes/sst_steel.htm

I like the fact that it comes with brakes already and for $249 they may be worth it but on the other hand, knowing myself, I don't really want to get something like a Walmart bike either.

I think Motobecane Track or Messenger would be a better purchase in this price range, you can just toss a freewheel on instead of the fixed cog. You might want to take a look at the City/Urban section on bikesdirect if you're using it just for family riding.

Do we have experience with BD? You're asking their customer support service.

Hmmm I thought that this one already came with a freewheel or more accurately, a flip-flop hub. I really don't care about having a fixed gear, SS is fine for those rides. It's just that it would be silly to take my S5 out for a Critical Mass ride, or for when I go out with my daughter doing maybe 13-15 mph...
