Carbon steerer tube with insert - do I use a star nut with this?
Hi all,
I picked up a new all-carbon Dodici fork for my Gara, and an expansion plug to use with it. The plug doesn't fit into the tube, though, and it looks like it has a non-carbon insert inside. Do I use a star nut with this because of the insert?

Star nut+carbon=bad.

If the steerer tube has an alloy sleeve you can use a star fangled nut, but on the other hand you can use expansion plugs on any material.

There's no alloy sleeve in there. Use the plug.
When installing, insert and expand expansion plug in steeerer tube first then adjust and tighten stem.

Also, leave a 5mm spacer on top of your stem so you don't crush the top portion of the steerer tube...that way the stem is clamping on the full steerer and not 5mm above it.
And use a torque wrench on your stem pinch bolts.

Thanks for the replies, guys.
I should've been more clear though - the plug that I got is too BIG to fit in the tube. Maybe I just got the wrong thing, it's this:

Yeah, unscrewed it 'til it came apart. Even just the base piece doesn't fit into the tube.

It all looks like it would fit if the lighter-colored inner ring on the tube wasn't there, which is why I thought it was maybe an insert for use with a star nut. I'm stumped.

Apparently the inner diameter of the fork steerer tube is too small for your compression plug which at 23.5mm is on the larger side of plugs. Try getting another one after you measure the inner diameter of the fork steerer tube.
This one's a good shot:

Considering it's compatible with a large range of inner diameters.
