Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

D.C. fixedgear century

There was a fixed gear century planed threw another board that happened twice a year. Seems that they wanted us all to keep a break on the bike, and keep the beer drinking to a minimum.

I am interested in setting up centuries and half centuries for fixed gear riders in the area. Suggestions for routs and dates are appreciated. I would like to run the figure 8 out in Nokesville in March. The WO&D at the end of this month, and more this summer. I have done the Nokesville, and it is a blast. The rollers at the end make it a lot of fun. That and the course is a figure 8, so you can stop at 50miles if your hurting and start drinking early.

I would like to see most riders riding brakless and having a good time. The more people we get the better.

I just organized a fixed 75 miler recently - Arlington -> W&OD -> White's Ferry -> C&O Canal -> Georgetown -> Arlington. Pretty much follows this route.

Post to the MASS list (see my sig.) and you should get takers. Most of us like drinking (Tip: tall waterbottles hold 2 bottles of beer) and having a blast but could care less if you run a brake or not.

That sounds like a really cool idea. I'd like to do one in the chicagoland area.
Do you plan a specific route and bake cookies? I've only been on mass organized centuries where they had cookies.

I so brought cookies on a DCC ride. I would love to try a century sometime this summer, but I have to work up to it. And get a comfier saddle! I think I finally justified the Brooks to myself. Let's keep that idea on the back burner for sure.

Man I almost forgot about the cookies you brought.
Yes together we will come up with a route when
everyone is prepared for more riding & less photos.

I've been thinking of the same. I mentioned to Pete, Jeff and Val about hitting Milwaukee - July apparently.

I would love to do a century of a FG. I live in the DC area as well. Keep me posted with the plans. Nokesville has a lot of good scenic roads.
