I've got the mirko ones with laces and they're awful. There is a really bad seam near where the "knuckle" of the little toe is. I've got red marks on my feet and I can't stand to walk in them.

Is this a bike shoe only thing?
They're essentially an overpriced pair of vans, and I've never had a pair of Vans that I couldn't skate in for weeks until they broke in. They start off stiff, but you can still function in them without a lot of rubbing and red marks. I guess I can attempt to break them in like a pair of skate shoes and do some bending and what not. Primary concern would be wear and tear, then not being able to return them if they still suck.

They aren't too big either, I normally wear a 9.5, ordered a 9 in these and the fit seems to be pretty decent.

mukman 07-02-14 06:08 AM

Yeah that sounds pretty lame. Something about one shoe not fitting all feet or some junk. I've had many skate shoes that weren't nice on my feet and cause all kinds of blisters in my foot arch.

Mumonkan 07-02-14 07:01 AM

just talking about shoes in general @bmontgomery87 , when i get new vans theyre stiff and uncomfortable at first but i wear only that pair for a week or so then theyre good

bmontgomery87 07-02-14 08:46 AM

I guess I'll try breaking them in. Hopefully thick socks will keep the discomfort from ruining my rides this week.

GENESTARWIND 07-02-14 09:25 AM

my specialized elite touring shoes needed no break in period and are comfortable.
walking or running for periods of time have never given me discomfort.
http://brimages.bikeboardmedia.netdn...bike-shoe2.jpg

maybe look into a touring spd shoe?

shimano makes one called rt82 which look similar to the specialized touring elites.
Walkable shoe, enclosed bottom.

I love my elite touring shoes and walking in them or running has never been an issue but they are wearing out and ive fixed them over the years"aka falling apart through use"... but the rt82 are what im considering next, i dont need a mtb shoe with knobs or any of that bs but a shoe i can ride clipless and walk in comfortably like my current shoe. something stiff for riding but not horrible for walking in like my elites.

edit: both those shoes look nice.

today I sold my vig frameset+crankset... the dude got a killer deal. probably building a different frameset in the future with the leftover components...

a track bike just isn't practical for where I live / i put way more miles on the caad10 than I ever put on the vig.

anyone else run into this kind of dilemma?

TMonk 07-02-14 10:15 AM

Why would you sell it? Need the cash?

I own 3 fg/ss framesets, only two of which are built right now. You have the road ride fixed gear, the dick around/riser bar short ride fixed gear, the track bike, the townie, the polo bike, the...

You'll probably miss it someday!

I typically put in 100-150 miles per week as long as the weather allows it.
Sure, my bike isn't practical for it, but it's the type of riding I enjoy, despite living in a hilly area.

I've debated a geared bike for longer rides, but I prefer just having my one bike and making it work.

I've debated the spd shoes in the past, but don't really want to make the switch to them. I like riding with straps and having shoes that I can ride in, then work in without having to change.

Today I slept in instead of starting to train for the brevet, like a boss. I suppose can do some freeweights and stuff.

Yeah i need the cash to fund my Serotta... the track bike was just the lowest on my priority list. I'll definitely keep my other components to make the next build easy/cheap..

Initial thoughts: they are the most uncomfortable, well marketed, over priced, piece of crap shoes I've ever put on my feet. Couldn't enjoy my commute for the constant rubbing (with socks).

Gonna try some thicker socks on the next ride.

I definitely agree that the shoes don't live up to the hype.

I got the slip ons too. The stiff, horribly-placed tag with sharp edges on the inside of the right shoe actually cut the top of my foot after walking around in them all day without socks.

That's why they end up like this:

Even broken in, they're mediocre at best as far as comfort goes even for cycling shoe standards. For me, they seemed to have lost some of their stiffness in the sole overtime with the continual break in process.
They pale in comparison with mission workshop's shoes which were comfortable from the get go and just got better with wear.

bmontgomery87 07-03-14 05:35 PM

Had the day off work. Didn't tell anyone and took the day to ride.

Tried the Chrome shoes out again, they feel better after breaking in a bit, and putting on thicker socks. Still not very comfy though.
Climbed one of the "right of passage" climbs my city has to offer this morning. It was miserable, but you end up at a giant star on top of a mountain, with an awesome view of Roanoke.

That would be rad, I don't see any means for propulsion, though, so must be just coasting it downhill.

I have a rowing machine at home that hasn't been used since I bought my first bike. It's an excellent workout, I just wish I was going somewhere rather than looking at the wall the entire time. Rolling down the street would be rad, I agree!

Today I squeezed in a dog walk and a short intense ride before Arthur hits us (although I think my area is going to be missed almost completely).
