i've seen countless fsa cranks back out during riding, crack and their quality seems subpar- especially for the price.

TenSpeedV2 06-19-17 09:52 PM

I was pissed at first, but then realized that these cranks are older than dirt. They came stock on the 2009 Jamis Sonik that I bought and then later stripped and put on my TK2. They have seen a ton of miles in the time that I have owned them, not to mention what abuse they took from the previous owner. 8 year old cranks and aside from this, there hasn't been a single issue.

johnnytheboy 06-19-17 10:03 PM

i routinely see cranks that are 10+ yrs old that haven't cracked. and the " single issue" you had was catastrophic.

seau grateau 06-19-17 10:07 PM

Ehh, 8 years isn't really older than dirt. Any decent square taper crank that hasn't been actively abused or run over by a car would last decades.

johnnytheboy 06-19-17 10:11 PM

i have 2 buddies running shimano deer head group sets (including cranks) that are still running strong. 25+ years old.

seau grateau 06-19-17 10:15 PM

The cranks on my Shogun, by best estimate, are three years older than me.

TMonk 06-19-17 11:14 PM

I had a FSA SLK carbon road crank for a while in college that would keep coming loose on the left side, hated that thing. I try to stick to Shimano cranks whenever possible - they just work. I've had others that were fancier but I don't see the point.

I have a 30 year old Sugino vp 130 crank. Got 7,500mi on it, and still going strong.

Meh. I've got a set of Sugino Mighty Compe cranks from the 1970's with over 50k miles on them. But really, unless there is a manufacturing flaw in a crankarm, it should last essentially forever.

TimothyH 06-20-17 07:11 AM

I replace my cranks proactively on a yearly basis.

Why take chances?

So can I get some suggestions or what?

50voltphantom 06-20-17 07:51 AM

75's?

TejanoTrackie 06-20-17 07:53 AM

Sugino 75 DD ftw

UltraManDan 06-20-17 08:19 AM

Yesterday I did my longest ride to date. 62 miles solo and held an average of 19mph. :D

The diamond frame doesn't have anywhere for bottle cage mounts, so I had to get creative. Electrical tape and zip ties to mount to bottles on the angles right within reach and out of my leg swing. It worked out really well, but ended up rubbing through the tape and scratching the frame a little. More tape next time!!

A little break at 40 miles. Found it in the glass bottle Tim :thumb:

Man, those bars aren't my cup of tea but that bike is the business.

Thanks! and yes, new bars are planned. I have some cheapo carbon straight bars coming in soon to try. I also want to try some compact drops and see how it rides.

motrheadsroadie 06-20-17 09:51 AM

would rather ride the rustiest pair of cottered cranks (or even american 1pc cranks) over the "nicest" fsa crank.

motrheadsroadie 06-20-17 09:54 AM

why do you need a carbon crank to deliver sandwiches to ppl?

johnnytheboy 06-20-17 10:05 AM

sugino. hell, even origin8 would be better than fsa.
