also falling gracefully and staying loose is the number 1 way to reduce the severity of your injuries upon impact. It is better to bend then to break, as the saying goes.
However you do need some advanced notice that you are about to crash before you can employ your skills, but even 0.5" is really enough time. 2+ seconds is totally luxurious, and many road pileups start with that much notice where you're like "god damnit, I'm doing down..."

having experience in other spots/physical activities absolutely helps. personally I grew up eating **** on dirt jumps w my bmx, wrestled for 2 yrs in high school, and did aggressive in-line skating during middle school, mainly street, so like a lot of guys, I have tons of experience eating ****.

you have any permo-damage? I'm 30 and I have some wear in the shoulders and knees.

As others have said, years of skating makes you real good at falling. I've gone down a handful of times and never had more than a scrapdd shoulder and hip. Got hit by a car last year and got up and walked away from it, just had a real sore shoulder/face/knee.

Today I almost crashed my car while staring at a girls butt...

Heart is still beating like a drum from the adrenaline rush.

Lessons learned:

1. It's not polite to stare.
2. Stuff actually does move in slow motion when you think you are abut to die.

staring at girls butts makes time slow for me, regardless of life or death tho.

Yesterday rode 5 miles in the rain to bar trivia with a buddy and we got second place. Should have gotten first, because the final, deciding question was a geography question, which is by far my best category, but I didn't know it. Still won $30 though, enough to cover our tab.

I avoided having to walk 12 miles home!

Earlier today dropped my keys down a crack in between an 800lb stationary safe and a wall. Only three keys on the ring, one is a house key, one is a laser cut key, the third is the key for the lock on my bike. I tried getting them out with all forms of implements with no dice. I actually seemed to make the problem worse and shove the keys farther down in the hole.

While debating whether to call my gf for a ride and get grief or hoof it home and get a ride in the morning, I suddenly realized that my lock was only on my top tube and the wave form bike rack at our office is bolted to the ground. I had a wrench in my tool pouch which fit the nuts on the bike rack. One unbolted bike rack later - my bike is free and I can ride with the lock with problem. My gf would have been po'd. crisis averted. The only reason I even bother with the lock in this area is peace of mind, the chances of anybody stealing it are pretty long.

I also realized that my "good guy, everybody loves him" boss who was fired last week was stealing from the company. I was reviewing bills that were submitted to our office this morning and realized that he was trying to get the company to pay his personal parking tickets. It's far from the shadiest thing I've discovered since he has left. I'm now starting to understand why he was terminated.

Any type of self defense training is good for saving your ass too. I used to mountain bike and downhill ski quite a bit on some pretty technical terrain. I took some bad falls and walked away from a couple of crashes I definitely should not have. One bike crash did leave me with a concussion, but I was lucky on that occasion.

edit: oh and on topic of falling, goalkeeper and ultimate frisbee are great for learning how to hit the ground right. I played soccer for most of my life until college, and ultimate since highschool. I cant even give a reasonable guess about how many times I've laid out over the years. Now, I fall a lot on my bike - cuz why not? - and dont have any issues

This. I wouldn't consider myself flexible but the last time I really went down hard (hit almost head on) I rolled up the hood and literally kissed my taint. No injuries besides a gash on my shin where her car fender dug in. Wasn't really supposed to walk away from that one.

I heard Marilyn Manson had ribs removed so he could do just that.

Sucker.

see what I did there?

Dannihilator 05-16-13 06:55 PM

Today I had to ride the final 2 miles home with a broken saddle rail. Put the flite back on the 930.

Huffandstuff 05-16-13 07:37 PM

Speaking of crashing, I nearly got right hooked two different times within five blocks. Doesn't rain for two weeks and then it rains and people forget how to drive, so annoying.

I didn't crash....

bones_mcbones 05-16-13 08:57 PM

today I was banned from forum.retro-gression.com. By FAR the easiest, and least deserving ban I have ever received.

Apparently crank length has nothing to do with toe overlap/wheelbase, and it was such an idiotic idea that the thread was deleted! Dear JESUS!!!!!!!!!

SO yeah, there's that.

skielbasa 05-16-13 09:23 PM

Today I rode clipless for the first time... I think I like it. Definitely easier to get in; getting out isn't really easier or harder, just different.

It's gonna be harder the moment you are at a dead stop and start tipping to the side, trust me. ;)

Not to carry on in this thread.......but:
I ride a 49cm frame with a 28mm rake fork. I am a bit familiar with your topic.

Crank length does have something to to overlap issues. But not enough to be of a concern. You won't solve any problems without going to stupid extremes. If you go from 175mm to 165mm arms you move your toe back less than a whopping 7/16 of an inch.

I point my toe down to clear the tire for a slight turn and gain much more than 10mm clearance.
I unclip for a sharp turn..............have to slow down anyway.
In an emergency, I fall down.

That's biking. Accept it or ride the bus.

Leukybear 05-16-13 10:00 PM

Today I'm pretty much fed up with the **** from the USPS. Really starting hope their financial bottom falls out and they become history. They will not be missed.

Dannihilator 05-16-13 10:05 PM

What happened?

I agree with that assessment. But there is some difference. If you could tuck your most forward point below the radius of the front wheel, could you gain space? I'm checking the math now.

And no hard feelings. I love RG's stuff.

The last package I got from Scrod sat in an Atlanta Post Office for 2 1/2 days until they saw fit to get to my local Post Office. My maillady stopped by to deliver it on her way home.

I had a package comming from Auorua (Denver), CO the next week. It left CO and went to Tampa!!! Five days for a Prioriaty Mail delivery. Sucks.
