today I did not ride a bike *lame face*

Played around with the fit on my road bike a bit and went for a 20 mile ride. Feels better so far -- I was getting really uncomfortable on my last long ride, and I think it was mostly due to the saddle being pushed too far back.

Today I saw this in my subdivision.

Neighbor bought a new trick bike and the first thing he did was load up the family and go joy riding. Look at them faces...

Nice! Always cool to see families out on bikes.

Today I noticed the insurance did cover for my stolen bike - the whole reinstatement value of the bike and all parts. That is something special with German household content insurance, they don't depreciate or use the present value. Money is already on my account, 2 weeks after the theft and one week after I have sent them all invoices and the police report.

Happy shopping! :p

While cleaning up a seatpost for my new build I noticed the top part of the clamp was anodized blue underneath the black paint. Thought it would look pretty cool and I'm about that life so I gave it an acetone bath and stripped the paint off.

Bontrager painted black over blue anodized?

Yeah but only on that one part of the clamp, weirdly.

TimothyH 04-19-19 08:15 PM

Maybe it is a counterfiet Bontrager part.

Weird. Maybe that's not the original top half of the clamp?

seau grateau 04-19-19 08:18 PM

Hard to imagine anyone going to all that trouble to counterfeit Bontrager, but maybe. It came installed on a bike I bought used last year.

seau grateau 04-19-19 08:32 PM

After a little Googling, it seems like some Trek bikes were spec'ed with these in recent years. This review features one with a red/orange ano clamp. Maybe the previous owner painted over it.

San Luis Rey Road Race cat 3, 4th/12 starters. Interesting race. Not as good as I wanted, but I had fun and it was still worth 3 upgrade points. I'm at 28/30 now so every point matters. Getting close! Full race report here (if interested)

this 5 deep podium is like half the race...

Man, as aging schlub racing SSCX I got my first podium last November and I was like 3rd out of 7 finishers (not even my best race statistically speaking)...but when it's 15 degrees F and a windchill of like -7, I'll take it. feelsgoodman.jpg

TMonk 04-22-19 10:42 AM

I wanted to go home but the race director was there and he wanted me to stay for the podium shot, so I did. You should get some prizes and a medal for just showing up to race in those conditions! You guys are tough out there in the Dakotas.

Today I was curious and quickly looked through CL for some carbon road bikes. I haven't been riding but it sparked some interest and it could be fun to get riding on something modern. I don't know anything about pricing modern stuff though, maybe I can get some opinions.

2011 Spesh Tarmac
https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sf...871412765.html
My issue with this bike is that I am not a SRAM fan. I have a whole 105 10s group, but that's extra work.

2012 Trek Madone
https://losangeles.craigslist.org/ws...869576160.html

TMonk 04-22-19 06:18 PM

I would expect to pay (up to) a grand for something like that on CL. You could probably find something in the $750 range if you waited/were patient. Really you should be able to get a bike like that with 11sp for 1k. In theory that would make it a bit more future proof but realistically 10sp parts will be available for a long time and there is no real performance difference w 11.

Out of the two it's a bit of a toss up, the spesh is newer but the Trek is a better spec'd bike.

hairnet 04-22-19 08:27 PM

Yeah, I'm not crazy about the Trek and I don't want to buy the Tarmac just to swap out all the parts, but I've always been into the Tarmacs.

TMonk 04-22-19 10:25 PM

Tarmacs are great riding bikes. Best of both worlds (IMO) would be that frame w the components on the Trek. But I'm sure the Madone is a perfectly fine bike. Bit of a toss up w this one, not sure what I'd do.

hairnet 04-22-19 11:38 PM

Well, I'll inquire about both anyway. Thanks!

I bought a TA Specialties 52t 1/8" 144 bcd track chainring for my track bike; felt like I was a little under geared for sprint laps at the SDVA (333m outdoor concrete). Previously 51/15t

Also I'm volunteering for the early shift at the Veloswap at the track on Sunday. Hopefully I can find a deal on some carbon track wheels. Been riding some unknown/unbranded alloy tubulars w dura ace hubs and vittoria corsas for a while, which roll fast, but aero tho!

PeopleAreIdiots 04-26-19 09:03 AM

Gale force winds on the way to work today. Luckily I was riding with them:thumb:. Felt bad for the people going the other way!

How does 52/15 feel? Too big for commuting? I wanna' go to 16t in the rear and atleast 50t in the front. Currently 48/15.
