Single Speed carbon?

I have been looking for a single speed to add to the stable. I have an Italian steel road bike and an aluminum grocery store hybrid so I thought "Hey a carbon single speed might be fun!" Imagine my surprise when I went looking and could not find a single example. It seems logical to pair the light weight of carbon with the simplicity of single speed. So help me out here: any carbon single speeds on the market? If not why not? Does carbon not lend itself well to single speed?

There isn't a market for it.

did for a bit till i started hearing a strange creak while stopping made me wary. plus the size or area around the BB needed to keep it from exploding makes the size to weight ratio you might as well ride a metal.

can be done if you want, anything can be done if you want to build it yourself.

What the ****?

How are you going to sell 5 different bikes, all with the exact same geometry, change the dropouts and fork, and say they're for different applications?
I can't imagine riding a 75deg headtube with a 43mm rake fork. Can it even ride straight?

I don't have any of these answers. There's a guy sponsored by them who races at my track and he really digs his frame though.

I'm sure its a helluva track frame for sure. Classic track geometry.
But you can't put a road fork on it and call it a road bike. Wonder how they sell any of them.

Nevermind. O.o

Not enough rich hipsters.

Carbon track frame + freehub? Add brakes. Am I missing something, here? Other than the fact that a carbon singlespeed is completely unnecessary for... well just about everything.

OMG I so totally wanted one of those. Still do too. Id totally ride one as my erryday whip. Sigh...

solipsist716 05-28-13 06:15 PM

If I remember correctly, Serenity had a problem with their integrated seatpost clamps slipping and the owner handled the situation about as well as a blind, deaf man would handle a bandsaw surrounded by a crowd of people.

That being said, what Morgan said. Changing fork rake and keeping 5 "different" frames the same is stupid, almost as stupid as a full carbon SS.

For what it's worth, Calfee (http://www.calfeedesign.com/) will make you a single-speed or fixed carbon frame.

Can't see how they get the belt on that. Is it some funky arrangement where the stays meet?

CharneK 05-28-13 07:33 PM

Forget Carbon, go Titanium

At 3k new I am not surprised Trek had trouble selling them. Having said that....I rode a used one and it was one hell of a nice ride. Dude wanted too much for it, and I wound up with a Masi instead.

If I saw one of these under 1k, I'd grab it in a heartbeat.

Find a Carbon BB30 or PF30 frame and use one of these eccentric bottom brackets. http://beercomponents.com/
