Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bikes: A light one, a heavy one, a yellow one and a rusty one.

I know that this subject has been beaten like a dead horse, but I have a specific question regarding the breaking in process of my new honey B-17. The manual says to apply proofide "several" times during the breaking in process....

I don't want to overproofide the thing, so does anybody have a rule on how many miles between proofide applications during the breaking in process?

thanks,
nate

Bikes: Bianchi Brava (fixed), Nishiki Prestige (fixed), Plum Vainqueur (track), Fuji Boulevard (Single-speed)

I applied a layer to my Brooks Professional before riding it and didn't apply another layer until 4 months later after daily use. Not what the manual says, but that was the advice given at the shop where I bought it.

Bikes: Crust Romanceur, VO Polyvalent, Surly Steamroller, others?

My Brooks B-17N is in the mail... I can't wait. I believe Sheldon has a good article on breaking in Brooks saddles, although he seems to promote the "alternative" methods of break-in, not necessarily using proofide. I found it to be an interesting and helpful resource.

I don't think it is possible to over-Proofide. I have 4 Brooks saddles - 1 B-17 and 3 Team Pros. When new I apply Proofide every couple of days letting the saddle sit in a warm area to soften the Proofide or several feet in front of a little space heater. Be careful if you do this. You only want gentle warmth, not hot. Every hour or so I check it, working the Proofide with the soft application cloth. I do this for a few hours. The warmth really seems to allow the Proofide to work in.
