on the off chance this post was serious and not troll bait.... I got a fixed gear because I wanted to get interested in bikes again. Fixed did that for me. I run a brake, but try to stop brakeless 99 percent of the time (new skills to learn, it's fun to skid, etc). When your legs are smoked and you CAN'T skid (long ride, hot day, big hill, whatever), you WANT a brake. Or someone cuts you off and you'd expertly, as quickly as possible, immediately hockey-stop-whip-skid right into their trunk, want a brake. Run a brake.

I rode brakeless on my beater for a for a few months, after my All-City, which had 2 brakes, got totaled in an accident, I decided to put a front brake on my beater as it'd have to be my commuter from now. After a few days riding it, got hit once again... brakes are dangerous and will get you killed.
Actually brakes have nothing to do with it and I don't encourage anyone to ride brakeless, if you're new to fixed gear riding, get at least a front brake, if you're experienced and think you can ride safely brakeless then do it. Getting hit sucks, and I don't think I'd want to increase the chances of it happening by riding brakeless again.

But seriously. Run at least a front brake unless you are exclusively riding around in a parking lot or something. You don't have to use it if you don't want to, but as the CCW world is fond of saying "It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it."

In that movie "Fixation", some dude talks about 'well actually brakes can be more dangerous because blah blah sudden stopping blah blah' and saying it like he just won the argument... Yes, in the velodrome, this is true. A closed space where you aren't surrounded by pedestrians and big 3-5000 lb boxes of rubber, glass and metal whizzing past you.

I wonder if that guy's moved on to road bikes by now.

I'm not really a huge fan of most of the local cheeses. It mostly stems from the fact that they will label cheddars as "extra-super sharp" when they are medium at best. I haven't gotten a really sharp cheese since I moved from California.

Who is trolling who here? So it might be a stupid never ceasing discussion, but if you think the subject in question is ridicules, just ignore the thread. It's quite common on here for a certain "elite" to go off topic in order to force/provoke mods to close a thread.

For the record I personally find the brake/no brake discussion ridicules, but who am I to judge; in any event I find it quite entertaining.
